Cameroon Musicians
Cameroon: Musicians union march attacked by police
Cameroon Musicians On Nov. 8th, 2012, a peaceful march was organised in Yaoundé by the Musicians Union of Cameroon, in order to protest against the Port of Douala's reiterated refusal to pay copyright royalties to artists. This demonstration was harshly repressed by the police forces on instructions of the General Delegate to the national security. Artists walked about 3 kilometers before they started to be brutally assaulted and beaten. More than 500 artists including Anne-Marie Nzié (pictured - aged 85) and the SYCAMU President, Roméo DIKA (who is also Vice-President of the International Federation of Musicians), were dragged to the ground and beaten with batons and fists. 63 of them were thrown into jail and only released after more than seven hours of detention. The others were transported in trucks and locked up for more than 10 hours. Romeo Dika is now accused by some media to have prepared an insurrection, and may be sentenced by life imprisonment or receive the death penalty.

Rocco Landesman steps downs as Chair of NEA
Statement from National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Rocco Landesman

November 20, 2012

Today, Rocco Landesman confirmed his plans to step down as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts at the end of the calendar year:

"My intention has always been to serve one term, and we have been able to accomplish more than I had ever thought possible: sparking a national movement around creative placemaking, forging significant relationships with other federal agencies, creating an unprecedented healing arts partnership with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and increasing both the scope and impact of our research office.

"We have continued to support and strengthen the entire spectrum of arts in this country, and we have been able to expand the national conversation through convenings, traditional media, and new technology. I am proud and honored to have served alongside such an amazing group of dedicated public servants.

"The time has come for me to become a cliché: I turned 65, am going to retire, and cannot wait to spend more time in Miami Beach."

NEA Senior Deputy Chairman Joan Shigekawa will serve as the acting head of the agency until a permanent successor is confirmed.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 to replace the Brussels Philharmonic orchestra's paper sheet music
By Tyler Lee on 11/08/2012 03:20 PST Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

Thanks to electronic devices like e-readers and tablets, buying physical copies of books and magazines are no longer our only option. Going digital means that publishers will spend less money printing, which in turn cuts down the amount of paper which could help sustain the environment, so we guess it's not surprising to see tablets starting to replace other paper products, such as sheet music for example. Musicians relying on their smartphones or tablets to read music certainly isn't new, but it looks like the Brussels Philharmonic will be the first orchestra in the world to replace paper sheet music with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet.

LABOR & POLITICS

Make History With Walmart Workers on Black Friday

JWJ Logo For more than a year, Walmart workers from around the country have been coming together to speak out for change. These workers have called on the company to address their concerns around low wages, unaffordable benefits, understaffing, erratic scheduling, and above all else the lack of respect in the workplace. Walmart warehouse workers have also been protesting the outrageous, unsafe conditions where they work.

After these brave workers spoke out for change, Walmart has been trying to silence them - some are getting fired, others are not getting called into work, and more are getting hours cut. It is not an easy decision, but without an end to the retaliation, Walmart workers across the country will be walking off the job in protest on Black Friday, November 23.

Will you back up these whistleblowers again and take your support of Walmart workers one step further? Then join in solidarity with Walmart workers as more go on strike on Black Friday!

YES - I want to join an event!

NO - But I can stand in solidarity with Walmart workers.

Thanks for your ongoing commitment to Walmart workers everywhere,

Hilary, Jonathan, Sarita, Liz, Ori, and the rest of the Jobs with Justice and American Rights at Work team

In the crisp autumn air blanketing mile-high Denver, leaves turned orange and red last month while many  construction sites exhibited a new hue of their own: pink.

Dozens of Denver Local 68 members working for signatory contractor Dynalectric walked onto the job site every day in October clad in pink hardhats and shirts to show support for curing breast cancer, one of the leading causes of death for women nationwide.

"Everyone knows someone who has been afflicted with the disease," said Local 68 President Ed Knox:
We have some members in the local who are survivors. It's something that impacts all of us. The folks at our job sites who wore pink for the month were positive about showing their support.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
