An ICSOM "Call to Action" for assistance to the musicians of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO)
From the ICSOM Governing Board
Dear friends and colleagues,
As you are all no doubt aware, the musicians of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) have been egregiously locked out by their management since October 21, and the musicians are taking a courageous stand to protect their organization and preserve the investment that the citizens of St. Paul have made in their historic orchestra for over 50 years. The musicians are paying their own health insurance premiums in order to care for their families, and the management has already canceled all concerts through December 31. We have all followed the press accounts of this negotiation and seen the destructive proposals by management that would permanently alter the ability of the organization to serve its community.
It is essential that the musicians of ICSOM respond whenever and wherever our members are in need. It is through our united network of orchestras that we can effectively articulate that a move against one of us is a move against all of us. In this way, we will demonstrate to all of our managements that our communities deserve positive stewardship of their cherished cultural institutions.
The musicians of the SPCO need our financial support. We ask, and encourage, all the orchestras of ICSOM to consider making a financial donation to the cause. A donation from your treasury, or a collection taken by the members of your Players' Association, would be of great assistance. We are confident that all of the musicians in our ICSOM orchestras are eager to stand with their colleagues in St. Paul.
The Call to Action to assist the locked out musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra also continues. We realize that it is difficult to raise funds for two orchestras at once, but the situation in the Twin Cities is unprecedented. The musicians of both orchestras are taking a brave and principled stand, and every musician must be ready to demonstrate that as they make this brave stand we all will stand with them. The managements of these orchestras are counting on our silence even as they impose silence upon their communities. But those managements will hear our music, will hear our voices of support, and they will feel the unity of musicians everywhere as we support our friends and colleagues. Wherever a musician is in need, let us all respond.
Let this serve as another "Call to Action" for our membership. What happens in St. Paul will affect us all. If we effectively respond to every Call to Action, we will demonstrate the power in collective action. We can and will make a powerful statement to our managements and boards as we work to spread the positive community message of the musicians of ICSOM.
Checks can be made out to: SPCO Musicians' Association, account #2

Minn. Orchestra's Vanska pleads: 'Find a way, talk together'
Article by: GRAYDON ROYCE
Star Tribune
November 15, 2012
In a letter to musicians and board members, the orchestra's music director expressed deep anxiety over the lockout's damaging effects.
Music Director Osmo Vänskä has taken the extraordinary step of breaking his silence on the Minnesota Orchestra lockout. In a letter to board members and musicians, Vänskä pleaded for a return to negotiations and said he is "desperately anxious" about the future of the orchestra.
"Please, do what it takes, find a way, talk together, listen to each other and come to a resolution of this dreadful situation," Vänskä wrote in the letter that he delivered to board chairman Jon Campbell and president Michael Henson on Monday. The letter also was sent to musicians.
Times are tough, but this is no way to treat a community treasure Robert Herold The Northwest Inlander, Spokane, Washington November 13, 2012
Having canceled five concerts, with negotiations apparently cut off and at a stalemate, the Spokane Symphony Orchestra Board must take whatever action is needed to get the musicians back on stage. What emerges from this community travesty in the making is a picture, not of greedy musicians, but rather of musicians who, having willingly exploited themselves just to play their music, are unwilling to further exploit themselves. And of course there's that little matter of putting food on the table.
At 50 percent earned income, the SSO is actually doing well. All it really needs is a small amount of additional unearned income. How about corporate America? Millions upon millions to SuperPACs, but no money to save community treasures? Right. In any case, boards have to ask. That's the gig. (And even at 50 percent earned income, Spokane can still do better - more people need to support our orchestra by buying more tickets. Trust me, the shows are worth it.) Read On
High-End Violin Dealer Sentenced to Prison
DAVID SCHOENBAUM Associated Press November 9, 2012
VIENNA - Dietmar Machold, 63, one of the world's leading dealers in multimillion-
dollar violins until he declared bankruptcy in November 2010, was sentenced to six years in prison Friday by Vienna's Criminal Court.
"You played high and lost big," said Judge Claudia Moravec-Loidolt as she pronounced sentence.
The sentence could have been 10 years, but the Austrian court considered his partial confession of guilt and acceptance of responsibility for losses estimated at $200 million as mitigating circumstances.

Three vice presidents, including two who were on the six-member team representing Atlanta Symphony Orchestra management in difficult contract negotiations with musicians, are departing the orchestra.
The ASO did not announce the moves but on Tuesday confirmed the leaders are leaving at week's end.
John Sparrow, vice president for orchestra initiatives and general manager, and Donald Fox, executive vice president for business operations and chief financial officer, were key players in the labor negotiations that led to a lockout before a agreement was reached in late September.
Charles Wade, vice president for marketing and symphony pops, is the third long-time leader exiting.
Symphony spokesperson Melissa Sanders declined comment on the departures, saying, "It's inappropriate to discuss personnel matters." Read On

NEW MEMBER FEATURE
DMA Welcomes Bobby Clark
Bobby Clark
Bobby Clark is looking for work on electric bass or rhythm guitar, playing folk, rock, soul, blues, or basic jazz. He began his musical journey in the 1960s, cutting his teeth on music by Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, the Beatles, and blues artists like Paul Butterfield, Albert King, and Canned Heat. He's been playing at a semi-professional level, off and on, ever since. His high school's music program consisted of a theory class, a musicology class, and "appreciation" classes. So Bobby is mostly self-taught. His improvisational skills developed early, because of his passion for improvisational rock bands like Cream and the Grateful Dead.
Since moving to the Denver area, Bobby has played with a handful of local bands, including currently with Juba Juba, a Grateful Dead "tribute" band. His other current project, which he leads, is BlueStoneMojo, an originals-oriented improvisational ensemble developing a creative fusion of folk, rock, blues and jazz--a sound he calls "jam band jazz."
If you need a bass player or rhythm guitarist for performance or recording, please give him a call at 303-759-0348, or emailbob@bluestonemojo.com

Some legislators and their friends on Wall Street are set on reaching a "grand bargain" during the post-election "lame duck" session of Congress that would cut the benefits that we and our children will depend on. They want to raise the retirement age for Social Security and Medicare, cut our Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA)and cut Medicaid, which could force families into bankruptcy when a loved one needs long-term care.
'Fix the Debt': A Trojan Horse for Corporate Tax Cuts
Maybe you've heard of it-the CEO campaign to "Fix the Debt." With a $60 million war chest and the blessing of more than 80 CEOs of America's biggest corporations, "Fix the Debt" is passing itself off as a reasoned call for compromise to save the nation from economic disaster. But as this new infographic and a recent study show, the companies behind Fix the Debt stand to gain $134 billion from one of the tax breaks they are promoting. Not just any tax break, mind you, but a new tax incentive for corporations to send U.S. jobs overseas.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
