SPCO locks out union players, quieting 2nd orchestra
|
Article by: GRAYDON ROYCE , Star Tribune
Updated: October 21, 2012 - 9:49 PM
The Twin Cities' distinctive status in the world of classical music took a turn towards dubious Sunday. As of 6 p.m., members of both world-class orchestras that call Minnesota home were locked out of their concert halls in contract disputes.
Union players at the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra failed to vote on an offer from management, and the board of directors shut the doors and canceled concerts through Nov. 4. In a lockout, players may not report for work and they receive no pay.
Musicians at the Minnesota Orchestra were locked out Oct. 1 after the union unanimously voted to reject what management had characterized as its final offer. So for the first time since the SPCO launched in 1959, neither orchestra will be playing for at least the next two weeks.
"After 10 months of negotiations, the Union and the Society agree that the SPCO faces a significant financial challenge, but the Union continues to reject that a significant reduction in the cost of the contract must be part of the solution," said SPCO President Dobson West in an e-mail statement Sunday night. "As a result, we are not close to an agreement."
Contract disputes at both the Minnesota Orchestra and the SPCO do make the Twin Cities unique in that both major orchestras are locked out. However, both Atlanta and Indianapolis symphony orchestras endured lockouts this fall. In Chicago, a short strike ended when musicians agreed to small raises.
"We're very disappointed and very perplexed that management has decided to take this step," said Carole Mason Smith, head of the musicians' negotiating committee, on Sunday night. "We made offers to continue to talk and play that were rejected and we're sorry the community has to suffer like this."

Trouble at the Spokane Symphony
| Posted by HEIDI.GROOVER Pacific NW Inlander Oct. 19, 2012 The Spokane Symphony and its musicians appear to be at an impasse over contract negotiations. Despite a balanced budget last year, the Symphony is looking to pay its musicians less, according to a press release from the musicians' union. In recent contract negotiations, the symphony proposed $15,132 salaries, down from $17,460. "Those of us struggling to cobble together a living wouldn't be able to do that [under the proposed contract]," says Adam Wallstein, the orchestra's timpanist and leader of the committee negotiating for a new contract. New theaters? Expanded museums? High-tech concert halls?
| By Ray Mark Rinaldi The Denver Post 9/30/2012
There are plenty of ideas on the table for how Denver ought to spend the $57 million left over from the Better Denver Bond that voters approved in 2007. There's only one real condition on the cash: Because of the language of the ballot measures that guide the remaining money, it has to go toward maintenance or expansion of city-owned cultural facilities. Symphony, opera musicians authorize strike
| After months of contract negotiations with the managements of the Seattle Symphony and Seattle Opera, the musicians of the Seattle Symphony and Opera Players' Organization have authorized a strike.
By Michael Upchurch Seattle Times arts writer 10/15/2012
The musicians of the Seattle Symphony and Opera Players' Organization (SSOPO) have authorized a strike.
After months of contract negotiations with the managements of the Seattle Symphony and Seattle Opera, the vote is in response to a contract offer Wednesday that called for musicians to take a 15 percent reduction in compensation in the 2012-13 season.
The reduction would come on top of earlier concessions topping $9.6 million that symphony and opera musicians have made in recent years, a SSOPO news release stated. That doesn't include "significant increases" in musicians' contribution toward health-care costs, the release said.
Seattle Symphony cellist David Sabee, quoted in the SSOPO news release, said that the symphony had a balanced annual budget in 2011-12 and is expected to balance its budget in the 2012-13 season as well. (The budget for each season was about $24 million.) But it's carrying an $11 million debt from the past season, and its endowment - at $25 million - is seriously underfunded. Read On

Zombieland: American Orchestras Face Scary Future
|
by David Beem 10/22/2012
It's the voodoo. That horrible, Kuru-inducing zombie voodoo.
These are heady times for the League of American Orchestras (LAO) and their ilk. True, their suits have grown a tad more maggot-ridden since their early ASOL days. But churning out full-throated, industry-consuming zombie administrators has proven decidedly lucrative. Plus, it provides for quality time with the family at supper, namely because supper is the family. The only problem is: musicians coming late to the table are getting the cold shoulder.
Hardly a week goes by without another orchestra lockout, strike, or cannibalistic feeding frenzy. This week, it's Seattle, and for those who are paying attention, something smells funky about the League's stewardship.
According to their website, the League "leads, supports, and champions America's symphony orchestras and the vitality of the music they perform." To that end, it offers internships and management training programs that have seeded administrators across the nation. Detroit is a notable beneficiary, for instance. Its Executive Director Anne Parsons was among the League's first class of fellows, and we've all seen how much that organization has benefited under her steady, decaying hand.
The point is, if ever the musicians needed an industry watchdog, it's today. The national orchestral landscape, replete with endless lockouts and strikes, could benefit from real expertise, but current management trends are practiced (and trained?) at eating the right hand to feed the left. Read On

Some may think I am preaching to the choir on environmental issues in Colorado but consider that in 2010 the city of San Francisco boasted a diversion rate of 85%. (Diversion rate is how much material is diverted from the land fill by recycling, compost, reducing and reusing) The same year Boulder's diversion rate was 35%! I think we can do better! Or next time you are out having coffee look around the room to see how many folks are sitting having their drinks in non-recyclable paper cups. I believe it is the little things that can add up to make a BIG difference! So come on out or invite your neighbor or friend and learn something new. YOU ARE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!!!

New Audio Monitoring Service Enables Direct Tracking of Published Music
| TuneSat offers 30-day free trial for up to 100 tracks so music creators and copyright owners can see unauthorized uses of their music on TV and Internet worldwide
 | TuneSat Video |
NEW YORK, October 10, 2012 - Musicians, composers, publishers and music labels rely on a cumbersome and flawed system of manual reporting for music performances across TV and sometimes the Web. Until recently, music rights holders had no easy way of knowing exactly who, when and how their music is being used-and how to accurately detect and document every unauthorized use. In an effort to modernize and add transparency and accountability independent of the Performing Rights Organizations (PROs), , a revolutionary audio monitoring web service, is offering musicians, composers, publishers and labels of all sizes the opportunity to actually see when and where their music is being played for the first time ever, through a 30-day free trial.

Social Security: 6 Facts You Need to Know
|
Social Security is our most important family protection program that works not just for retirees, but also for people with disabilities and children who've lost a working parent. It's a promise for all generations. People pay for this benefit throughout their working lives. Social Security is immensely popular with voters across the political spectrum, which is why those who would like to dismantle the program consistently distort the facts and falsely claim the program is "bankrupt." It's important for working people to know the truth about the program and push back against Social Security myths and lies and fight for more, not less retirement security.
Here are six Social Security facts you need to know:

PETITION: Stand with Walmart workers
| "I've never been part of anything like this before." Those are the words of an organizer who arrived at Walmart's hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas last week , along with nearly 100 Walmart workers from across the US, to peacefully protest at Walmart's annual investor meeting. They were joined by warehouse workers from Walmart's supply chain who went on strike last month. This is the first time that Walmart's retail workers have ever gone on strike in the corporation's 50-year history, and momentum is building fast. Workers in Florida, Maryland, Texas, Washington, California, Missouri, Minnesota and Kentucky all walked off the job - bringing the strike to a total of 12 states. SIGN PETITION

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
