An ICSOM "Call to Action"
| An ICSOM "Call to Action" for assistance to the musicians of the Indianapolis Symphony From the ICSOM Governing Board Dear friends and colleagues, As you are all no doubt aware, the musicians of the Indianapolis Symphony have been egregiously locked out by their management for over four weeks, and the musicians are taking a courageous stand to protect their organization and preserve the investment that the citizens of Indianapolis have made in their historic orchestra for 80 years. The musicians have made six different proposals that would allow them to return to the stage, all of which have been rejected. The musicians are paying their own health insurance premiums in order to care for their families, and the management has already canceled all concerts through October 14. We have all followed the press accounts of this negotiation and seen the destructive proposals by management that would permanently alter the ability of the organization to serve its community. During Lockout Season, Orchestra Musicians Grapple With Their Future
| By Jeff Lunden npr.org
It's been a tumultuous time for American orchestras. Labor disputes have shut down the Minnesota Orchestra and Indianapolis Symphony, and strikes and lockouts have affected orchestras in Chicago, Atlanta and Louisville in the past year.
Whether Mozart is on the bill or Mahler, it's an expensive proposition to present a symphony orchestra. To do the music justice, you need between 80 and 100 musicians to play it, and their salaries and health care benefits make up most of an orchestra's budget. Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras, a service organization that represents professional and community ensembles, says the last half of the 20th century was a period of enormous growth for performing arts organizations. Read On or Listen
Editor's Note: Jesse Rosen is simply wrong when claiming that cost for musicians "make up most of an orchestra's budget." But then, Mr. Rosen has been often wrong before. Music Director's salaries and costly guest artists are commonly in this line item.
The true number is 40% at best, and quickly declining. Some are down as low as 20%.

The Autumn of Our Discontent: Orchestral Musicians and the Crisis in Arts Management
|
By Bruce Ridge Chairman, International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians (ICSOM)
 | Indianapolis Symphony - Locked Out |
We live in a time when labor is under attack. As Robert Reich has written, the median male worker earns less today (when adjusted for inflation) than 30 years ago, and as a result the working class that made America great struggles. In the 1970's, the wealthiest 1% of Americans took in about 9% of the nation's income. Today, that same 1% absorbs over 23% of the nation's income.
The economics for symphony orchestras are even more complex, as orchestras depend on the philanthropic nature of America's citizens, and as wealth becomes more centralized, organizations need to have a message that inspires those with wealth to donate to, and invest in, artistic institutions. The reasons to be articulated for the continued support of our orchestras are compelling. Read On

Letter of support from former MN Orch music directors
|
Star Tribune Oct 6, 2012
As former music directors of the Minnesota Orchestra, we came to the state because we believe that it wants and deserves to have a world-class orchestra.
 | Keep World-Class Musicians in Orchestra Hall |
We are proud of the cultural gem we have built, with the musicians, for more than half a century. It required long and careful work to assemble a championship team, person by person, always building on a vision of superb music-making.
This legacy can be swiftly destroyed, a tragedy not only for lovers of great music, but for the cultural soul and significance of the region.
An orchestra does not recover easily, from such drastic cuts, if ever. We urge the Minnesota Orchestral Association to do everything in its power to preserve this longstanding jewel.

Some may think I am preaching to the choir on environmental issues in Colorado but consider that in 2010 the city of San Francisco boasted a diversion rate of 85%. (Diversion rate is how much material is diverted from the land fill by recycling, compost, reducing and reusing) The same year Boulder's diversion rate was 35%! I think we can do better! Or next time you are out having coffee look around the room to see how many folks are sitting having their drinks in non-recyclable paper cups. I believe it is the little things that can add up to make a BIG difference! So come on out or invite your neighbor or friend and learn something new. YOU ARE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!!!

New Audio Monitoring Service Enables Direct Tracking of Published Music
| TuneSat offers 30-day free trial for up to 100 tracks so music creators and copyright owners can see unauthorized uses of their music on TV and Internet worldwide
 | TuneSat Video |
NEW YORK, October 10, 2012 - Musicians, composers, publishers and music labels rely on a cumbersome and flawed system of manual reporting for music performances across TV and sometimes the Web. Until recently, music rights holders had no easy way of knowing exactly who, when and how their music is being used-and how to accurately detect and document every unauthorized use. In an effort to modernize and add transparency and accountability independent of the Performing Rights Organizations (PROs), , a revolutionary audio monitoring web service, is offering musicians, composers, publishers and labels of all sizes the opportunity to actually see when and where their music is being played for the first time ever, through a 30-day free trial.

Unprecedented Walmart news
|
My coworkers at Walmart and I just took a historic step: We've gone on strike against Walmart!
Many of us are taking a huge risk by going on strike. That's why we need your support.
Will you stand with us?
Click here to sign the SignOn.org petition supporting Walmart's striking workers.
For over a year, Walmart retail workers have been coming together to call for change at Walmart. Through our worker-led organization United for Respect at Walmart, workers like myself have been calling on the company to address issues with scheduling, benefits, wages, and above all, respect in the workplace.
But instead of being responsive, Walmart has lashed out at us for speaking up. The company is trying to silence and intimidate us through unfair disciplinary actions, cutbacks in hours, and even firings. We're on strike to protest these illegal attempts to silence us. Venanzi Luna

DMA Member/Unaffiliated candidate Paul Fiorino laces-up for the governor's race
|
 | Paul Fiorino |
It says something about the level of noise in this year's gubernatorial race when the candidate with the lowest profile has perhaps the most intriguing back-story.
Paul Fiorino didn't advertise for his running mate on Craigslist, he doesn't have Dog the Bounty Hunter campaigning on his behalf, and he hasn't been accused of pilfering money from a fragile octogenarian.
But he sure can dance.
In 2006 Fiorino decided to run for governor when he learned that the state arts council might be abolished. He became the first ever unaffiliated candidate to make it onto the Colorado gubernatorial ballot, and he did so while training for the lead role in the Colorado Ballet's rendition of The Nutcracker.
Fiorino describes himself as a dance instructor, producer, director and performing-arts advocate. While the move from performance artist to state executive may seem counterintuitive, Fiorino believes that his background in the arts makes him uniquely qualified to govern.

Republican Senator, Vietnam Veteran Endorses President Obama
| Larry Pressler Former U.S. Senator from South Dakota Posted: 10/08/2012 11:59 am
As a combat veteran of two tours in Vietnam with twenty-two years of service as a Republican member of the U.S. House and Senate, I endorse President Barack Obama for a second term as our Commander-in-Chief. Candidates publicly praise our service members, veterans and their families, but President Obama supports them in word and deed, anywhere and every time. As a Vietnam vet, one of the reasons I support President Obama is because he has consistently shown he understands that our commitment to our servicemen and women may begin when they put on their uniform, but that it must never end. Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
