Four IPR Trustees were selected as advisers for PRWeek's 2014 Career Guide to share the skills most vital for a practitioner's success. The expert panel included Mike Fernandez, Cargill; Bill Heyman, Heyman Associates; Gary Sheffer, General Electric; and Andy Polansky, Weber Shandwick. The group agreed the skills a PR professional must master are as plentiful as they are broad.

All advisers agreed the talents a PR professional continues to develop with the realm of social and digital platforms. The daily evolution of PR demands modern communicators who love to learn and are curious about the world around them. Decades of research confirm that leaders, supervisors, and organizational culture are crucial foundation stones for strategic employee communications. Yet, many organizations have weak communication foundations and don't act on this research knowledge. As a result, levels of employee trust, engagement, retention, and other performance indicators remain distressingly low. 

This article identifies reasons why organizations ignore the research findings and includes a list of checkpoints that practitioners can use to assess the relative strength of the communication foundations in their organizations. Read more. 

Each year the Public Relations Leadership Forum attracts some of the brightest, high-performing communications managers from Global 1000 companies and public relations firms. This year's forum is December 11-12 in NYC and will focus on the effective use of research in planning and implementing public relations activities.
