AVE: The War Between PR & Advertising


When press agents and publicists began pushing their content to newspapers in the 1920s and 1930s, the tension between PR and advertising began.

According to Professor Tom Watson of Bournemouth University, PR pros used AVE (advertising value equivalency) to estimate how much money was saved on advertising when journalists used the material they presented them with. 

AVE calculation made advertising agencies feel gypped and newspaper owners dislike the PR "space grabbers" they believed would lower revenue and reader confidence. 


Decades later, feelings are still mixed.

Hokuetsu Paper Mills Japanese Translation Available


Now available on the IPR website is a Japanese translation of "Hokuetsu Paper Mills: Defending Its Independence from a Hostile Takeover." 


The case study explores the role of communications in helping Japanese company Hokuetsu Paper to resist an unsolicited takeover bid by Japan's largest paper mill company, Oji Paper.  


Listening to the advice of legal advisers, the company outsourced a communication advisory firm that was able to help save the company's independence by establishing key messages based on historical research, extensive interviews and industry analysis.

Celebrating "The Business of Changing the World," IPR's 52nd Annual Distinguished Lecture and Awards Dinner is sure to be an international delight.
