Four Communications Lessons of the 2012 Campaign

Mark Penn, Microsoft, and Dana Perino, Fox News, teamed up to deliver the first-ever team lecture at the IPR Annual Distinguished Lecture and Awards Dinner. The presentation, "Communication Lessons of the 2012 Campaign: Why ___Won," is now available to watch on the IPR web site.

Mark Penn, President Clinton's White House pollster for six years and a key adviser in his 1996 reelection and Dana Perino, former Deputy Press Secretary to George W. Bush, discussed four lessons from the U.S. Presidential election.

In one of the lessons, "Are our politics going to be as combative as cable tv?" Mark Penn tells the audience of over 260 PR professionals that cable tv is set up deliberately as Side A and Side B with the two sides going at each other. "This was not a campaign about big ideas. It was a campaign about choices."

Research on neuroscience and public relations, employee communications, social media and measurement standards will be core 2013 directions for IPR, led by newly elected officers and Trustees.

"These themes emerged from the IPR Trustees Research Symposium earlier this month, which immediately followed the Board meeting where officers and Trustees were elected," said president and CEO Frank Ovaitt.

New Trustees joining the Board will broaden IPR's international and research focus. These include David Albritton, vice president and chief communications officer for Exelis; Terence Flynn, Ph.D., faculty member, McMaster University; Michele Galen, head of communications, Novartis International; Christopher Graves, global CEO, Ogilvy Public Relations; Jennifer Prosek, founder and CEO, Prosek Partners; James Spangler, chief communications officer, Navistar International; and Michael Stewart, partner and global director of communications, McKinsey and Company.

AMEC, the International Association for Measurement and Evaluation of Communication, elected David Rockland as Chairman of AMEC and Jeremy Thompson as Vice Chairman to the new team to lead the organization's future growth.

David Rockland was former chair of the IPR Measurement Commission and now serves as an active member. David is Partner and Managing Director of Ketchum Global Research & Analytics and CEO of Ketchum Change. Rockland has

a doctorate in economics and has held positions in corporate, academic and research provider organizations.

Rockland said: "AMEC has grown dramatically in recent years. However, we believe the Barcelona Principles framework provides us with a real opportunity to firmly establish the value of communications research and analytics for PR professionals."
