Greetings!
At this time of the year our attention is focused on the next year's budget and planning. Fortunately, we have a final state budget which will allow us to have our District final budget ready for approval by the Board at the September meeting. Chancellor's Cabinet held a day-long retreat and discussed many topics including how student success will be integrated into our organizational structure and our budget planning. We also discussed the new Student Success Scorecard and other measures that we can use to demonstrate how well we are succeeding in meeting identified goals. This week we say farewell to our colleague and friend, Charlie Ng, who moves on to the Mira Costa District as their Vice President for Business and Administrative Services. We wish Charlie much happiness and success. I hope your summer is going well for you and your loved ones. Sincerely, Bruce Baron Chancellor |

SBCCD now accredited to train in CERT
|
Our district has been certified by the federal government to offer Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) to our staff according to Whitney Fields,
District Environmental Health & Safety Administrator.
Our first goal is to train our own faculty and staff which will begin in the fall. We are also able to train in the community. CERT is excellent training (I have been CERT certified) and it provides skills to respond to an emergency situation in terms of search and rescue, evacuation, use of appropriate tools and emergency apparatus, and other procedures.

Payroll Dept. to move under Human Resource
|
Beginning July 1st, the Payroll Department will be under the umbrella of Human Resources.
In a move that is designed to improve reporting, information sharing, and overall accuracy, Payroll will report in the short-term directly to Interim Vice Chancellor of Human Resources, Tanya Rogers.
With the retirement of Angie Ontiveros, a new position, Human Resources Administrative Manager, has been Board approved to supervise the area and the day-to-day work in Human Resources.

- EOP&S - $15 million
- Disabled Students Programs and Services - $15 million
- CalWORKs - $8 million

We are still waiting for the budget to be signed by the Governor and then we can expect more information from the Chancellor's Office. We will keep you posted.

SBCCD wins grant to develop regional digital consortium
|
SBCCD has been successful in winning the state Chancellor's Office award for regional leadership of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Digital Media project.
Dr. Albert Maniaol, Director of Applied Technologies and Training in the Economic Development and Corporate Training Division, was the grant writer and is designated the Deputy Sector Navigator.
The initial award is $300,000 for one year which can be renewed for three more years and possibly ongoing.
The proposal addresses the specific requirements of the grant and focuses on the CCCCO theme "doing what matters for jobs and the economy."
The grant essentially focuses on the region's capacity to process digital information in a manner that supports education and career development.

Jackie's last workday will be August 31, 2013
|
It will be a sad day indeed when Jackie Buus retires from the district after 34 years of service.
Jackie's last day will be August 31st and she has formally noticed the district. The recruitment for this position is now open and we are working on developing a pool of candidates.
Jackie is a great person to work with and she will be missed.
|
See you on August 16!
|
I am looking forward to see you at our Friday, August 16th in-service. All district staff will be invited to be at the morning session where I will bring everyone up-to-date on matters that concern us all.
Since the SBVC theater will be undergoing renovations and the CHC theater is too small, the opening session will be held at an off-campus location to be determined. I would much rather see all of you in person and be live at one college and "on screen" at the other college.
More information will be coming from your campus administration.

My Vision
|
We will:
- be considered the "best" community college in the State.
- build a culture of trust with open and respectful communication.
- increase all partnerships with business and industry, other academic institutions, non-profit agencies so that we can be stronger through combining resources and working together.
- improve student success as measured by the State Chancellor's Office and any additional indicators that we determine are appropriate.
- increase our resource development and bring new grants and fundraising dollars to the colleges.
- continue to develop and implement new academic programs that meet the needs of our community.
- use technology to work smarter and to improve opportunities for student success.
- provide service to students that reflects quality and excellence.
- enhance our safety programs and be responsive to staff concerns about environmental health and safety.
- hold professional development, including wellness, to be an integral part of our commitment to faculty and staff.
- be good stewards of the environment and continue to develop and implement the SBCCD Sustainability Plan and alternative energy programs.

Please let me know how I can help you in the performance of your important work on behalf of our great District.
