Greetings!

The spring semester is flying by and my optimism about the future of our community college district could not be higher.  The trick is to not get discouraged by the day-to-day problems and to keep the big picture, the mission, the vision, in mind. We are a great district and we change the lives of thousands in our communities.

No matter where you work there are problems.  As a matter of fact, SBCCD has moved through the last two years with many less problems than many other districts across the state.  We have avoided furloughs that reduce salary and we have maintained our fringe benefits (most notably our health insurance).  We have managed to continue our contractual step-and-column increases, and successfully implemented pay for the increased workload of faculty to write and assess student learning outcomes. I am proud that we have made these decisions. It reflects our commitment to the faculty and staff who are at the heart of this institution and who make it their daily work to help students become educated and achieve their goals.

Our successes are many and through our innovation, persistence and caring, will only increase in the years to come.

Thank you for all you do for our students.

Sincerely,

Bruce Baron
Chancellor

Dr. Gloria Fisher named Acting President of SBVC
Effective, April 11th, Dr. Gloria Fisher has been the Acting President of SBVC.  She assumes the duties of President in addition to her other assignment as Interim Vice President for Student Services.

Sadly, Dr. Glen Kuck had to take an extended leave of absence to deal with a family emergency and will not be back to work until June 3rd.  Glen returns to his prior job classification also effective April 11th.

These actions will be taken to the May 9th Board meeting for final approval.

I want to thank Dr. Fisher for agreeing to take on this responsibility for the interim period.  I know she can count on all of us for support.

Details will be sent to you regarding the live streaming of the open forum and how to submit the rating form.

Dr. Jeremiah Gilbert, Academic Senate President, will summarize the results and review the with them Chancellor on May 3rd.

Let's be optimistic that we will have an outstanding group of candidates from which to make a selection.

Colleen Gamboa is  CSEA employee of the year
Of the more than 200,000 CSEA members statewide, only five are selected    as employee of the year.

We are very proud to announce that our own Colleen Gamboa, Sr. Payroll Accountant and CSEA chapter president is a CSEA employee of the year. I am proud to have been among those who nominated her.

Colleen is a true leader, an outstanding employee, and a supportive, collegial member of the district shared governance team.

Colleen is a strong advocate for the classified staff of our district.  In all aspects of her position at SBCCD she shows great character, integrity, honesty and caring.

Colleen will formally receive her award at the CSEA conference in July.

Congratulations, Colleen!
District police work proactively with SBVC leadership and local police to fight crime
After a rash of crime on the city streets surrounding SBVC, college Acting President Gloria Fisher, working with Interim SBCCD Chief of Police, Pierre Galvez, proactively acted to beef up security surrounding the college as part of a crime deterrent program.

With today's open forum to discuss this topic, the timely warnings sent to all students, faculty and staff through our "Connect" system, the additional patrols and the improved lighting project, it's good to see that public safety is everyone's priority.
State releases Student Success Scorecard

The time is now for our political leaders to find a comprehensive solution to immigration reform. See my letter below to President Obama and our local legislative leaders.

My Vision

We will:

  • be considered the "best" community college in the State.
  • build a culture of trust with open and respectful communication.
  • increase all partnerships with business and industry, other academic institutions, non-profit agencies so that we can be stronger through combining resources and working together.
  • improve student success as measured by the State Chancellor's Office and any additional indicators that we determine are appropriate.
  • increase our resource development and bring new grants and fundraising dollars to the colleges.
  • continue to develop and implement new academic programs that meet the needs of our community.
  • use technology to work smarter and to improve opportunities for student success.
  • provide service to students that reflects quality and excellence.
  • enhance our safety programs and be responsive to staff concerns about environmental health and safety.
  • hold professional development, including wellness, to be an integral part of our commitment to faculty and staff.
  • be good stewards of the environment and continue to develop and implement the SBCCD Sustainability Plan and alternative energy programs.
Please let me know how I can help you in the performance of your important work on behalf of our great District.

Sincerely,
Bruce
