Happy Friday!

Thank you for a very good year

As 2012 comes to a close, I want to thank you for all you have done to help students during this year.  It has not always been easy but as long as our hearts are in the right place students will find their success.

There has been a great deal to be grateful for this past year.  Our district continues to move forward, and we are being recognized for our achievements. Here are just a few of our accomplishments.
  • Our independent audit report for 2011-2012 had zero findings for the audit year and all prior year findings were corrected.
  • Our campuses and Economic Develop and Corporate Training Division were the recipients of more than $15 million in grants and contracts.
  • We began to review our processes to determine best practices.  Improvements in the purchase order process have been made and a project to become "paperless" is underway.
  • "Left-lane" project at CHC, funded in part, through the district's strategic planning initiative, was designed to improve student success.
  • Won $1 million annual grant to manage the Alternate Text Production Center, developing braille materials for students throughout the state and providing job training to prison inmates for lifelong skills.
  • Expanded tutoring program that provides "live" tutoring via the Internet. Pilot project at sister colleges makes this a potential revenue generator.
  • Began pilot program to see if e-textbooks can replace hard copy text books, saving students between 20% and 50%.
  • Board passed a resolution to support the use of Open Educational Resources which will provide textbooks to students at no cost.
  • Delivery of Blackboard classes was moved to hosted server, improving reliability and saving thousands in service needs.
  •  Enjoyed our District-wide Classified staff appreciation day.
  • Vastly improved our campus environmental health and safety programs.
  • Implemented "Go-Smart" student bus pass program for all students.
  • Improved delivery of police and security services, working with our staff with advice from the professional organization.
  • Improved emergency communications with use of "Connect" application messaging, and phone system annunciation.
  • Initiated computer upgrade and replacement program at both colleges to replace all computers on a five-year rotation.
  • Had totally "clean" bond audit for 2011-2012.
  • Created district-wide Sustainability Plan along with many energy savings projects including CHC solar farm, new central plant at SBVC, L.E.E.D buildings, and participation in Energy Education "demand" savings program.
  • Publish "Police Beat" newsletter weekly to keep staff and students updated about crime statistics and to provide safety tips.
  • Publish "Safety Newsletter" to provide updates about safety information, training opportunities and reporting procedures.
  • Publish "Dollars and Sense" newsletter to keep staff updated about business services changes and tips.
  • Chancellor's Task Force on Services to Veterans, which helped to provide the forum for improvements to services such as the new Veteran's Center at SBVC.
  • Chancellors Task Force on Hispanic Serving Institutions, to study issues to improve quality of life for all students on campus.
  • Developed Communications Career Academy in partnership with K-12 campuses and Cal State University San Bernardino to support interest in communication careers and build an annual student film festival.
  • Created MOU with San Bernardino City Schools and Cal State University San Bernardino to give priority registration to students taking the Early Assessment test and passing or taking senior year remediation.

The list goes on and on.  We all have a great deal to be proud of and to smile about.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to these achievements. We are a district, we are a team.

I can't wait until next year so we can continue our important work and create more opportunities for student success.

I wish you a happy and healthy new year.  See you in 2013.

Sincerely,

Bruce Baron

New College President's approved by Trustees
New Presidents At its December 13th meeting, the Board of Trustees approved Dr. Cheryl Marshall as the new president of Crafton Hills College.

Dr. Marshall has been Interim President since the retirement of Gloria Harrison last summer.  She has been doing a wonderful job in advancing CHC and meeting the challenges that face our students.  Their success is the number one concern for Dr. Marshall.

Dr. Glen Kuck has been named Interim President of SBVC.  A national search did not provide a candidate for the permanent position.  We will go back out for a new, national recruitment right after the new year.

Dr. Kuck brings a great deal of excellent experience to the position including years of being a faculty member, instructional manager, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Technology and Educational Support Services, and now Interim President.

Glen is a pleasure to work with and will continue to be a great colleague to us all.

Please welcome both of these wonderful individuals to your campus as we continue to move forward to serve students.
New Board members take their seats
New Board

The San Bernardino Community College District (SBCCD) installed newly elected Board of Trustees members Gloria Macίas Harrison, Dr. Kathleen (Katy) Henry and Nickolas W. Zoumbos, and re-elected Trustee John Longville at their regularly scheduled meeting on December 13. They also installed the new San  Bernardino Valley College student trustee Ferny Arana Garcia.

In addition, the Board elected Trustee Dr. Donald Singer to serve as Board President, Trustee John Longville as Vice President and Trustee Donna Ferracone as Clerk. The Trustees will serve in those offices for two years.

My Vision

We will:

  • be considered the "best" community college in the State.
  • build a culture of trust with open and respectful communication.
  • increase all partnerships with business and industry, other academic institutions, non-profit agencies so that we can be stronger through combining resources and working together.
  • improve student success as measured by the State Chancellor's Office and any additional indicators that we determine are appropriate.
  • increase our resource development and bring new grants and fundraising dollars to the colleges.
  • continue to develop and implement new academic programs that meet the needs of our community.
  • use technology to work smarter and to improve opportunities for student success.
  • provide service to students that reflects quality and excellence.
  • enhance our safety programs and be responsive to staff concerns about environmental health and safety.
  • hold professional development, including wellness, to be an integral part of our commitment to faculty and staff.
  • be good stewards of the environment and continue to develop and implement the SBCCD Sustainability Plan and alternative energy programs.

Please let me know how I can help you in the performance of your important work on behalf of our great District.

Sincerely,
Bruce
