AFB LOGO

Welcome to the summer edition of the AFB newsletter,

President Barack Obama's visit to Berlin last week was a successful affirmation of the ongoing friendship between Germany and the US. In the time since Obama's last visit, world leaders have grown increasingly more aware that we must work in concert to address pressing issues that affect the global community.

American Friends of Bucerius is as pleased as ever that we can continue to foster transatlantic cooperation, understanding, and friendship; our events this spring reflect those goals.

One particular highlight was the meeting of German Honorary Consuls in Berlin, by invitation of ZEIT Stiftung. There Manfred Lahnstein, chairman of the board of trustees of the ZEIT-Stiftung and former German Minister of Economics and Finance, gave the keynote speech on the value of international partnerships. At the same event, Dr. Michael Gring was awarded the Honorary Consul's Medal of Achievement in recognition of his work with ZEIT-Stiftung and Bucerius Law School.

Another highlight was the launch of the Bucerius Global Legacy Campaign, which will create an endowment that supports existing Bucerius programs and expand scholarship opportunities for students participating in ZEIT-Stiftung and Bucerius Law School programs.

Thank you for your continued support. As always, please stay connected with us through Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Warm regards,

Nina

Event Recap: Climate-Proofing Cities

Superstorm Sandy caused an estimated $25 billion in lost business activity, left 8.1 million homes without power across 17 states, and damaged or destroyed over 305,000 housing units in New York. How do we shield major metropolitan areas from the superstorms of the future? How do we use urban planning to prevent such superstorms from happening? These were the questions tackled in a panel discussion entitled "Climate-Proofing Cities," held in late March at German House in New York and organized by the American Friends of Bucerius, the German Center for Research and Innovation, and the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany New York.

Gerd Bucerius Day 2013

The Center for Studium Generale and Personal Development (ZSP) hosted the 2nd annual Gerd Bucerius Day on May 22nd. To honor the legacy of Bucerius founder Gerd Bucerius, more than 80 students and staff members took part in social projects throughout Hamburg - despite the "Hamburg-like" weather. The scope of the projects was very diverse and included advising non-profits on fundraising strategy, doing renovation work in shelters and community centers, and helping out at handicraft work with the elderly.

UBS Leadership Excellence Program 2012/2013

For four days this past April, twenty managing directors from Legal & Compliance at UBS convened once again in Hamburg for the second part of the UBS Leadership Excellence Program, designed and delivered by Bucerius Executive Education. The first part of this program took place in October, 2012.

The participants again were offered a full, diverse program. Prof. Niels Van Quaquebeke, fellow of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at Bucerius Center on the Legal Profession, and Dr. Tilman Eckloff, director of re|spic|ere, opened the program by continuing to explore the themes first introduced in October, including self-motivation and the basics of teamwork. They also offered peer supervision sessions for participants to talk about their own cases.
