PASTOR'S CORNER

June 22, 2014 2nd Sunday after Pentecost

Jesus said: "Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it." Mathew 10:39

Jesus restates here some of his central themes: our lives are gifts from God, gifts to be freely returned to God as well as shared with our brothers and sisters. Those who selfishly try to hold on to their lives will lose them; those who freely give their lives away will find them. We can well imagine that the people of Jesus' time found this teaching to be as challenging as we do today; in fact, we are told of Jesus' struggle in the Garden of Olives, indicating that he too found it to be challenging! Living a full Christian life is a challenging proposition.

CLARKSTON SEWING CLUB

Women and girls of the Clarkston refugee community are gathering on Thursdays at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church to learn and refine basic sewing machine skills.  Under the tutelage of experienced volunteers from the Global Village Project, a school in Decatur that serves teenage refugee girls whose educations have been interrupted by war, the program participants use fabric, sewing machines and related equipment to design and produce personal items that will find application in their own lives.  Good sewing machine practice and care, identification of various types of fabrics and their best use, proper measurement techniques, and simple color theory are all covered in the course of the 8 meetings scheduled for June, July, and August. The club is limited to 10 participants at this time.
