PASTOR'S CORNER

A few weeks ago I got a call from the Coalition for American Renewal asking me how the teleconference went.  I told them that I am a pastor in the community and I don't do teleconferences, I work with people in the community, face to face.

Frankly I was troubled by their agenda and the moral issues that they are focusing on.  While these issues are important, they are secondary to the moral issues we are facing here in Stone Mountain and Clarkston.  So I wrote Dr. Schuller:

The next time you come to Atlanta how about setting aside some time to meet with the people who are doing hands on ministry.  You could help us wash the filthy clothes from the homeless in our partnership with Mercy Church - a church for the homeless in Atlanta - so that they have enough clothing to serve all of the homeless, feed the homeless across the street in our partnership with Rock of Ages, help us address gun violence in a community where there was a shootout during a funeral at another church, and share how we might be more impactful.  These are the moral issues of our context!  How might we have success in transforming the community so that it becomes a place of peace?  Because it is in the Shalom (peace, prosperity, wealth) of our community that we will find our Shalom.

Today I received a reply, and am off to the Marriott to discuss our mission.  Here is what they wrote me:

Rev. Tatro

Dr. Schuller and I will be hosting a luncheon at the Marquis Marriott.  We are working with the Points of Light Institute to discuss ways in which we can highlight the great work that churches are doing in the community. This is a small gathering that will include Neil Bush.  This is an invitation only event, and I want to make sure you are on the list if you can come.

In the world for Jesus, this is what we are called to be, this is who we are!

Staff members, donors, volunteers, interns, and newly arrived refugees will celebrate Thanksgiving together at this event. It is a wonderful occasion to share the tradition of Thanksgiving, as well as a great time to share and exchange cultures and experiences. The Thanksgiving Feast will be full of food, music, performances, children's activities, and lots of fun.
