PASTOR'S CORNER
Following Jesus will mean surrendering the power that masquerades as security in order to love the neighbor and welcome the stranger. It will mean avoiding the safe path in order to pursue the good. But in a culture of fear, we find such risks all the more difficult since our natural inclinations lead us to close in on ourselves when we face danger. How can we maintain the posture of the open hand toward a world that scares us?
Prof. Scott Bader-Saye, Seminary of the Southwest
I couldn't help but think of Alan Mackie, and our adventures at Mercy Church, when I read this quote. It is easy to welcome in the homeless, addict, and mentally ill when most of your congregation fits into one of these categories. But what about those of us who have it "all together".
I think the greatest challenge happens when we are forced to deal with other people's messiness; we soon realize that their messes and our messes are not all that different. We need Jesus as much as they do. But because we are able to keep our messes under control (for the most part), we sometimes deceive ourselves into believing that we don't need Jesus as much as they do. When that facade is stripped away, we face the real danger of having our world view turned upside down.
May God shatter the idol of "having it all together" so that we can come to Christ in humility and faith, trusting only in God's mercy and love. Only then will we see with Christ's eyes and love as Christ loved us.
