In the News....

Pets of the Homeless received 350 pounds of pet food and over $200 from attendees of Art Paws in Reno on Sunday, July 12.  "Thank you" to all those who donated.  Landess Witmer, organizer of the event said, "Art Paws is so proud to have helped your incredible cause for pets and their people!"

Read for Scruffy Program

Reading is such an important part of education and encouraging children to read extra is paramount.  Children have a natural curiosity about the world around them.  Often they see unfortunate people and animals in their communities and need to acknowledge that some people have more than others and need help.  Our program encourages lessons on compassion and philanthropy through class discussions with the teacher.   Our program "Read for Scruffy" is quite simple.  Teachers print out a compelling photo(s) from our website and start the discussion with the class, maybe asking if they have seen a similar situation.  They then ask the children how they would help that person, suggesting that they raise money that could help provide pet food, veterinary care and sleeping compartments to homeless shelters.  The teacher would introduce Pets of the Homeless "Read for Scruffy" program. Each student asks their family, friends and neighbors to make a donation for every book they read.  Each child is given a flyer, provided by Pets of the Homeless, and a signup sheet. As part of the project, you might have a poster contest to help the students illustrate the need and we will post the winning poster on our website.

The teacher decides the duration of the project and when it is over a check is mailed to Feeding Pets of the Homeless.  A certificate of appreciation is mailed to the class.

To join the nationwide program, send us the name of your school, teacher's name and email address, the mailing address along with the grade or class, and we will send you flyers to help you get started (please indicate how many) and we'll email you a sample of a pledge form.

Meet Blue

Blue, a 7 year old pit bull terrier and his homeless owner live in a man made tunnel. Unfortunately, Blue's owner was detained and Blue was taken by animal control to a shelter for a few days where he developed kennel cough. When his owner retrieved him, Blue had a green runny nose and a bad cough.  Pets of the Homeless paid for an exam, and antibiotics.  Blue is back to feeling good with his dad!

For People on the Street, Pets Provide Companionship and Protection

Genevieve Frederick founded Pets of the Homeless in 2006 to offer animals the food their owners cannot provide.

"When faced with the possibility of homelessness, many have to decide if they will start this journey with their pet or give it up.  The only thing they may have left is the unconditional love the pet offers and companionship when no one else will interact."
