From King Hall to City Hall
An Interview with Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells T/91

"I moved back to Culver City in 2007, where I became politically active, and voilą, I'm Mayor of the town in which I grew up!"

Walking through the halls of King Hall in the late 80s and early 90s, '91 Theatre alumna Meghan Sahli-Wells never thought she'd be one of only 5 elected female city council members for Culver City in the last 100 years and eventually the town's mayor.  However, though Meghan's position as Mayor of Culver City may have been unforeseen her passion for government was far from new.

"I had been politically active at a pretty young age, joining the L.A. Student Coalition in fifth or sixth grade. We protested against Apartheid in South Africa, racism in the U.S., and more. In high school, this passion was fostered by my favorite LASCHA teacher Jerry Freedman [who] stimulated healthy debate in the classroom, and inspired kids like me to act on our beliefs. He went far beyond teaching Government, he taught us to embody the principles of Democracy. He helped to plant the seeds that grew into my sense of civic participation and empowerment today."
Universal Pictures chooses LACHSA Alumna!

Universal Pictures has selected Saila Reyes M/09 to participate in their Emerging Writers Fellowship. Saila is one of only 5 applicants selected out of nearly 700 screenwriters.

Though Saila studied music in high school she still credits LACHSA with her passion for film. "I actually never took the screenwriting class, but seeing a student's work from there actually started me down this whole journey in the first place."

Sarah Kuo M/13 Makes History!

Congratulations are in order for music alumna Sarah Kuo who is now a member of the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet. Not only is being a member of this prestigious group a monumental accomplishment, Sarah makes history as she is the first female musician to do so.
