Goodbye to Visual Arts Chair Leslie Karten
January 18th, 2013
Greetings!

After nine exemplary years as the chair of visual arts, Leslie Karten will be leaving LACHSA at the end of January to tackle new adventures as the Director for Visual Arts for the Boston Public Schools.
Leslie Karten
Our arts chairs, hold a special place at LACHSA.  Their unique role encompasses more than the scheduling of arts classes and allocating budget resources.  They are really the visionary architects of their respective arts departments; their work shapes the living legacy of LACHSA.  In all ways, Leslie Karten is a standout.

In addition to leading a strong, world class visual arts department, Leslie Karten will be remembered by several signature achievements.  The visual arts portfolio, A Gift of Love, has come to represent the quality and artistry of our students and department.

The arts school representatives that visit LACHSA regularly to recruit, come to LACHSA, because of department that Leslie Karten has led.  Her relationship with these institutions and the strong team of professional teaching artists Leslie has assembled are a main attraction to the admissions representatives.

And who among us can forget the student exhibitions where the work of our students--in our recent America show or the Art of Tolerance or Engage--has touched each of us in some special way.

Through all of her leadership, Leslie entrusted the high school education of two of her children to the LACHSA community.  What a tremendous testament to her belief in LACHSA.  For your service, dedication, and commitment we thank you and wish you the best in Boston.

Liz Young will serve as interim arts chair for visual arts until the end of the school year.  Liz has already served in this capacity and is more than capable to lead the LACHSA VA department.  A permanent chair will be in place for the 2013-2014 school year.

All periods of transition present opportunities and challenges.  Our students and families may need additional support during this time.  The strength and talent of students body and the dedication and professionalism of our faculty and staff will sustain us through this transition.   Please contact the administration with any questions or concerns throughout.

Sincerely,
