Leadership Transition
CONGRATULATIONS DEB

We are proud to announce that our fearless leader, Dr. Deb Houry, has been selected as the new Director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the CDC. We could not be happier for her! Deb has been an outstanding emergency medicine physician, teacher, researcher, mentor, and friend to so many here at Emory and will truly be missed. A true visionary, Deb led the ECIC for 8 years, pushing boundaries, securing grants, and building a collaborative and functional, multidisciplinary network of injury prevention professionals. She brings her passion, innovation, and true excellence in leadership to the NCIPC, where she will no doubt make a difference in the lives of many. Deb officially joined CDC on Oct. 6th.

With Deb taking this new position, the ECIC has restructured its leadership with Shakiyla Smith as the new Administrative Director and Dr. Monica Swahn as the new Academic Director. The Steering Committee will continue to function throughout this transition with some modifications. Please note that this is an opportunity for others in our community to take up different leadership roles within the ECIC, which will enable us to continue to thrive during this period. If you are interested in becoming more involved please contact Shakiyla or Monica at ecic@emory.edu.
Grant Announcement
ICRC GRANT

Unfortunately, the Center did not receive a renewal of funding from CDC's Injury Control Research Center grant. Due to this, we will be scaling down certain programs until we have secured additional funding. We will be eligible to re-apply for this grant in 2 years.

This does not mean ECIC is going away! Though we have to modify key programmatic and technical service offerings, we are still a functioning Center and convener of a wonderful injury prevention network. Please stay in touch and look out for upcoming lectures, meetings, trainings, and opportunities to contribute your expertise.
Safe Communities Atlanta
APPLICATION SUBMISSION

The City of Atlanta is close to submitting an application to the National Safety Council (NSC) to become a designated Safe Community. Deb attended their task force meetings and witnessed great strides towards this effort. The ECIC and Emory's Safety Alliance will continue to support this coalition and collaborate with them in the future.

Coursera Course
UNDERSTANDING VIOLENCE

This summer Drs. Deb Houry and Pamela Scully taught the first online course at Emory focused on violence. They had over 26,000 people enrolled in the course representing 187 countries. This free, 6-week course focused on the complexities of violence approaching prevention from multiple disciplines and perspectives. They covered different types of violence as well as various topics deepening the understanding of violence in a local, national, and global context.
