Quarterly Meeting Highlights
SEPTEMBER 11, 2013 
  • ECIC Updates: Center Director, Dr. Deb Houry, thanked everyone for their help with providing materials for ECIC's Center Grant. Affiliated faculty, please see our website for your name, contact information, bio, and injury areas of research. If you are not listed or if information is missing, please email us, so we can add you, thanks. We are looking forward to our 20th Anniversary Celebration and Fundraiser on Nov. 14th and will be hosting a silent auction, link and more information forthcoming.

ECIC celebrates it's 20th year as an Injury Center next month!
Join the festivities at the Quarterly Meeting on Nov. 14th or the 20th Anniversary Celebration and Fundraising Event that evening.   • Brown Bag Lecture Series: Our Brown Bag Lecture Series begins again this month with a panel presentation on Oct. 24th from 12 - 1pm.  We will be hearing from Dr. Betty Woodman (Contemporary Leadership Project), Mr. Greg Loughlin (Georgia Commission on Family Violence), Dr. Angela Amar (Emory School of Nursing), and Ms. Tamar Goldenberg (Emory School of Public Health). They will discuss their research on partner violence as well as the community response. 
  • Certificate Program: ECIC's Injury & Violence Prevention Certificate Program was approved in May 2013 and begins this fall. The certificate is available to Emory MPH and PhD students but our goal is to expand the program in coming years to all Emory students and students from our partner universities.  
  • Practicum Program: Three new interns from the Rollins School of Public Health have begun working through ECIC's Practicum Program. We welcome Hamidah Ali, Kinda Zureick and Jonathan Bressler to the injury prevention community. Hamidah is working with the ECIC, Kinda is working with Safe Kids Georgia and Jonathan is working with the Georgia Violent Death Reporting System.

  • WestJEM: The 4th ECIC special issue came out this August! Grab your copy at the next meeting or ECIC event or check out the interactive version online: http://bit.ly/145BY9p. Also, we are now accepting submissions for the 5th issue, due: Dec. 16, 2013. This next issue will focus on: Using Social Media in Injury Prevention Practice and Research. Please demonstrate how you, as a researcher or community organization, leverage social dynamics and networks to spread injury prevention messages, share current findings, and increase access to injury-related evidence-based information. Submit your manuscript directly to WestJEM. Links to all ECIC issues can be found on our website.    
  • Pilot Grant Program: This year our goal is to move existing projects and near final proposals to grant submission and to provide resources that may facilitate the completion of your proposal. Please email your proposal to Shakiyla Smith
    by Nov. 15, 2013. For guidelines and more information visit our website.  
  • ASC Conference: The American Society of Criminology conference is next month right here in Atlanta, November 20 - 23, 2013. ECIC will be presenting: Innovative Partnerships and Strategies to Reduce Violence in Georgia. This is a fantastic conference, so we encourage the ECIC community to get involved. A list of ECIC-affiliated faculty presenting will be shared soon. Visit the ASC website for more information.
