Exmouth social
Tuesday 1st April, the Exmouth
We're continuing our monthly informal get-togethers at the Tuesday Gourmet Burger Night at the Exmouth Arms in Bath Road (other food is available!). The next event is on Tuesday 1st April (no it's not an April Fool!) at 6.30pm. If you'd like to come along email Scarlett on scarlett@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk or just come along on the night.
Skillspace Tuesday 8th April The Beehive
Graham Boston: How good is your website?
We may think our website is OK - and our friends and family may say it's great - but what do visitors really think about it, and what messages does it give about us and our business? Graham Boston of www.gbewbtuition.co.uk will show examples of typical small business websites and invite responses from the audience. He will then give tips on how they could be improved, leading to a better experience for the visitor and ultimately to increased sales. For more information contact belinda@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk or join us at 7.30pm in the upstairs room at the Beehive.
Cheltenham Connect AGM Thursday 17th April
We're holding our AGM in the upstairs room at the Exmouth Arms in Bath Road on 17th April at 7pm. During the meeting we'll look at everything we achieved over the past year, discuss future events and review our constitution to ensure it still reflects what we do. We're also looking for a new Chair who is passionate about the South Cheltenham community as, after five years at the helm, Wendy has decided to step down! If you'd like more information, wish to nominate someone, or have any ideas that you would like to share please contact Dave Savell on dave@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk
Please note this is a CC members-only event and let us know if you are coming so that we can put out enough chairs.
'Coffee Connect'
Friday 25 April at Cook, Bath Road
We're really excited to announce our first 'Coffee Connect' event!
It's an opportunity get out of the house and meet other local people for coffee/tea and a chat, whatever your age and interests. Some people have already contacted Vanessa to express interest, but if you haven't, don't worry - either email her or just come along to Cook on Bath Road at 4pm on 25th April.
At the first event everyone who comes can discuss what they'd like to do at future events and how to reach out to include the more isolated and elderly members of our community.
Quiz Saturday 26 April, Bowling Club, Suffolk Square
Our next quiz is on Saturday 26th April at the Bowling Club with our usual highly entertaining quizmaster! Join us from 7pm for an evening's quizzing and snacks for just £5. The quiz will start promptly at 7.30pm. To book email Belinda on Belinda@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk and drop your payment in to Scarlett at ATC Floors and Doors in Tivoli. You can either come as a team of 4 or join up with other people on the night. And if you could spare a couple of hours to help Scarlett with the organisation beforehand and/or on the night, she'd love to hear from you.

Connect Streets
There has been lots going on recently! Last week Sue Brown's artwork was installed on the wall of the Exmouth Arms. Martin Horwood MP, James Arkell (Chairman of Arkells), local councillors and many of those who've been involved in the project from Cheltenham Connect, Bath Road Traders and SPJARA came along to meet Sue and celebrate this wonderful addition to the Bath Road.

The seven trees we have now planted in the Bath Road are all coming into leaf and will be blossoming soon and we are planning to plant three more trees in Suffolk Street. We need help with watering these so if you are a regular visitor to the Bath Road and would like to be added to the roster (the more people the less work for each one) please call Adrian Phillips on 01242 230284 or email adrian.phillips@gmx.com
Our plans for the painting of all the 15 or so Bath Road utility boxes and the Norwood roundabout are also proceeding well. Local designer Chantal Freeman is working with us and she is developing ideas that we will take to owners of the boxes before seeking planning permission. We hope that two more planters, of a similar design to those installed last year next to the roundabout, will be installed elsewhere in the Bath Road this summer.
As part of their wayfinding project the council will shortly be erecting a road monolith with maps and information (which will relate to similar ones elsewhere in the town) on the pavement opposite the post office.

You can see a list of local clubs and groups via the Local Organisations link under the Local Links box at the left-hand side of our website. Please let us know if you are running anything that you would like added.
Green success!
At the end of February Cheltenham Borough Council voted through a motion to go back to their Joint Core Strategy (JCS) partners Tewkesbury Borough Council and Gloucester Council to remove Leckhampton and Chargrove from the JCS. This gives unanimous cross-party support to saving the open countryside at Leckhampton and Chargrove. It's the result of much hard work by LEGLAG and everyone who signed their petition or responded to the JCS or the planning application.
Stroud Eco Open Homes 2014 Saturday May 3rd and Sunday May 4th Transition Stroud is again bringing together householders, individuals and organisations across the Stroud valleys to celebrate 'fit for future' homes. During the events visitors will be able to learn from homeowners and get lots of ideas about how their home can be more energy efficient. Local History Group
We're delighted that CC member Stuart Manton has agreed to lead the ongoing work on our history website. Here is a brief update from him.
"Since I became involved with the South Cheltenham Local Traders' History website at the end of last year my initial priority was to ensure we have more current photographs of the properties on the website. With the assistance of local historians I've also continued to upload more information about the shops and businesses and I'm pleased to report that we have more than 50 individual histories of the Bath Road alone and many more for Tivoli and the Suffolks. It's been very encouraging to receive old photographs and local memories of the shops from residents and these have also been entered onto the site. If you haven't already seen it please take a look http://www.cheltenhamsouthtown.org
Suffolk Parade 1950

More details are being added on a weekly basis and it would be really good to hear from anyone with an interest in the project who might like to get involved. Also if you have any information about the local trading history which you think could be of interest please let me know either via the contacts page on the site or by calling me on 07526 668 696."
Brian Torode
Local priest and one of the most popular and well-liked members of the Local History Society, Brian Torode, passed away earlier this month after a long battle with cancer. Brian made a big contribution to the South Town Traders History project as an expert on the history of Tivoli. He was always very willing to share his knowledge with others and to encourage them to develop their own interest in local history. We join with others in sending our best wishes and condolences to his family.
Volunteers needed
We're always looking for new people to join our events team. You don't need to commit a lot of time, and it's a great way to meet new people. So if you'd like to help organise one of our events or can spare an hour or two to sell raffle tickets Scarlett would love to hear from you.
