City of Oxnard Steps Up Recycling at the 2014 Strawberry Festival

Vendor recycling for Strawberry Festival The City of Oxnard seeks to make this year's California Strawberry Festival a successful, environmentally friendly and sustainable event.

Since 2004, when the City of Oxnard and the Oxnard City Corps kicked off its recycling program at the popular festival, almost 70 tons of material has been recycled, including cardboard, plastic water and soda bottles, glass bottles, cans and plastic buckets. Guests are asked to use the recycling bins and vendors are asked to donate usable leftover food to FOOD Share. Last year, 200 pounds of food was donated to FOOD Share and 10 tons of material was recycled and diverted from landfills, according to the Conejo Valley Happening newsletter.

This year, a pilot program for food and organics recycling is being instituted for vendors. Vendors will be asked to separate materials that can be composted and made into soil amendments.

The 2014 festival is May 17 and 18 at Strawberry Meadows at College Park in Oxnard. Tickets can be purchased online. For more information, visit www.strawberry-fest.org. For more information about the city of Oxnard's Environmental Resources Division, visit www.CityofOxnard.org.
