Ventura Water Launches Second Film Contest; Harrison Sponsors

Harrison Industries is sponsoring the Audience Choice Award to recognize the most popular water awareness film in a contest being conducted by Ventura Water.


The second year of the "Water: Take 1" Online Short Film Contest kicked off March 19 at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach Hotel.  

Ventura Water Take 1 postcard"In its first year, 'Water: Take 1' drew 35 film submissions and thousands of viewers from around the world," said Ventura Mayor Mike Tracy at the event,which drew about 200 community leaders and stakeholders. 


"By expanding this contest in 2013, we hope to spark actions that will lead to sustainable solutions to the serious local, national and global issues facing our water resources."


Representing Harrison Industries at the function was General Manager Lynn Harrison and his wife, Patty. 


Viewers visiting can vote for their favorite entry online. The film with the most votes will receive Harrison's Audience Choice Award.


Ventura Water, the City of Ventura's water department provides high quality drinking water and water reclamation services to residents 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

VCOE Magazine Recognizes Many Contributors to Public Education 


Focus on Education Winter 2013 This month, the Ventura County Office of Education released its Focus on Education magazine through the Ventura County Star and the VCOE website. 


This issue was dedicated to giving grateful recognition to those many community groups, organizations and individuals who selflessly support our county's public education system through donations, programs, manpower and other means. For these dedicated people, it's all about the students and helping our educators successfully perform their jobs. 


Examples of those profiled include educational programs at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, Born Learning Trails supported by the United Way of Ventura County, and volunteers who help produce the county's Mock Trial, Science Fair and Acadamic Decathlon programs. These are just a small sampling of the thousands of individuals who help make learning fun and successful for Ventura County's students.

Community Memorial Hospital 

& Ojai Valley Community Hospital Announce New Chiefs of Staff

Community Memorial Health System recently announced the appointments of Dr. Thomas Golden as Chief of Staff at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura and Dr. Rochelle Wilson as Chief of Staff at Ojai Valley Community Hospital. Their terms will run for two years.

Both physicians will serve on the Board of Trustees as their hospital's medical staff representative.

Dr. Golden is an orthopedic surgeon certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a Fellow of The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and an active member of The Arthroscopy Association of North America.

He also is a member of The California Orthopedic Association and The California Medical Association. 

Dr. Wilson has been a family physician in Ojai since 1999 and is certified by the American Board of Family Practice. 


She previously practiced medicine in Torrance, Palos Verdes and Garden Grove and is a diplomat of the American Academy of Family Medicine.

The City of Ventura is National Green City Finalist


2013 Green City Award Ventura is one of the greenest cities in the nation, according to "Waste & Recycling News," a national trade publication of U.S. trash and recycling haulers.


Ventura was one of three finalists in the medium-sized community division (100,001 to 500,000 residents) recognized for their innovative programs to reduce waste and boost recycling at W&RN's Residential Recycling Conference in Chicago on March 19-21. Eugene, Ore., was selected the division's Green City of the Year. The other city in contention was Gainesville, Fla.


Whisenhunt Communicationsclient Harrison Industries nominated the city of Ventura for the honor and WC staff aided the Ventura-based trash and recycling hauler in gathering information on Ventura's recycling efforts that were submitted in the nomination form.


"We are honored to be considered as a finalist for the National Green City Award," Mayor Mike Tracy said. "The city of Ventura is committed to protecting the environment, and consideration for his award validates our efforts."


Working closely with Harrison Industries and its strategic partners Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station and Agromin, Ventura has one of the highest recycling rates at 75 percent. 


"We are very proud of our success, made possible through our partnership with Harrison Industries and the people of Ventura," Tracy said.

Ventura's St. Patricks's Day Parade Lauded as Biggest and Best 


2013 Ventura St. Patrick's Day Parade photos You didn't have be Irish to enjoy the 25th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade that marched down Main Street in downtown Ventura on March 16.  Organizers report it was one of the biggest and best parades ever.


This year's Grand Marshals, the McGrath family, also won the Arnold Hubbard Memorial Trophy for "Best-in-Parade." McGrath family members are well known for their commitment to preserving Ventura County's farmlands and for their love of the St. Patrick's Day Parade.


Joining the McGraths were a long line of marching bands, dancers, acrobats, clowns, horses and floats. There were more than 80 entries in all.


Nan Drake, director of Government Affairs and Public Relations for WC client Harrison Industries, and longtime Ventura City Councilman Jim Monahan have served as co-chairs of this popular annual event for several years.
