Historical Tidbit:  Plymouth County Agricultural Fair

View from Broad St. cattle barn, grandstand, exhibition hall
and half-mile racetrack in foreground

Bridgewater was once the home of the Plymouth County Agricultural Society's Annual Fair.  It began on the Bridgewater Common and front lawn of the Academy Building in the early 1800's.  By the 1850's, it had grown to a large fairground complex just north of the Town River on Broad Street.  There was a 1/2 mile horse racing track, grandstands, cattle sheds and a huge exhibition hall.  There were a number of functions in the hall and grounds over the course of a year but the main event was an 8-day fair in late August each year.  The Governor would attend and open the fair with a blast from a ceremonial cannon cast at the iron works.  There would be displays and competition of produce grown over the summer.  There would also be entertainment each evening of magicians, dance troop and bands, to mention a few.  The fairgrounds in Bridgewater eventually closed down in the early 1890's and consolidated with other grange fairs in the area.
The land was then turned into a brickyard.  The exhibition hall went on to be used as a function hall for many years and was eventually used as a shoe factory up until WWII.

Up until the early 1950's, there were smaller fairs in town at many other locations in town, such as:  Legion Field, Grange Park, McElwain School and Flynn's Field next door to the school.

 Support TJ 2 !

The BR robotics team, TJ-squared, is doing very well this year so far already!  It is looking favorable that they will be invited to the district championship in Hartford, Ct., and if so, they will have a very good chance of qualifying to go to the world championship in St. Louis in April.  Although our students and families have worked very hard to raise money, it has been very difficult to sustain our team, without a corporate sponsor the past year or two.  A group of current parents & alumni students & parents have established a non-profit group, Friends of TJ2 Robotics, Inc., but at this point, we still have not been able to attract any major contributors.

As a result, a GoFundMe has been set up:   www.gofundme.com/tj2frcteam88

If anyone can donate, large or small, your donation will be tax deductible and will certainly help us reach our goal.  We will be most appreciative of any help.  And just as important, if you would be willing to share this post on your Facebook page, and otherwise spread the word, we would be most grateful. You never know who might have a soft spot in their hearts (and wallets) for an amazing program for teenagers!  Thanks in advance.

Did you know The Historical Room at the Bridgewater Public Library is open on Tuesday evenings?  Our dedicated volunteer, Bob Wood, is there from 5:00 pm until 6:30 pm every week to assist any patrons who wish to visit the Historical Room.  Come by and visit!

Bridgewater Public Library owns The Bridgewater Independent on microfilm from 1876.  We have the Vital Records for most of the cities and towns in Massachusetts in either book or microfiche format.
The Historical Room has a collection of Bridgewater authors.  Since Bridgewater is a college town, many notable authors have lived and worked here.
Below is a brief bibliography of just some of the work you will find in the historical room.
  •  The Bridgewater Historical Collectors, Pictorial History: Bridgewater, Massachusetts, Bridgewater, Mass.:
  • The Bridgewater Historical Collectors, 1994.
This paperbound volume contains old photographs of various locations of interest around Bridgewater.
  • Doherty, Katherine M., History Highlights, Bridgewater Massachusetts:  A Commemorative Journal, Taunton, Mass.,
  • W. S. Sullwold, 1976.
Published for the Bridgewater Bicentennial Commission, this volume provides a wealth of information on Bridgewater history.  It is an excellent starting point for researchers who want to know about the town.  It documents the early settlement of Bridgewater and highlights many fascinating facts.
  • Latham, William, Epitaphs in old Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
  • Bowie, MD, Heritage Books, 1986.
A complete list of epitaphs in the graveyards of West Bridgewater, Bridgewater and East Bridgewater.  All of the public graveyards and most of the private graveyards are included up to 1882.  Family historians use this source when they visit Bridgewater for summer genealogy trips.
It has a very useful index.
  • Mitchell, Nahum, History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater in Plymouth County, Massachusetts.  Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1970 (reprint of 1840 edition)
This book has a family register of the earliest settlers in Bridgewater and their descendants.  Genealogists often consult this book first before they explore other sources when they visit us.

Hallie Ephron to Speak at Bridgewater Public Library on April 5th

Inspired by Hollywood and Hitchcock, Hallie
comes to the Bridgewater Public Library on April 5 to talk about her new suspense novel, Night Night, Sleep Tight.
The New York Times bestselling author will talk about growing up in Beverly Hills in a family of writers.  Her new book is inspired by an infamous murder that took place around the corner from her childhood home.
Set in 1960's Hollywood, her book draws on her parents' experience in the movie business.  Henry and Phoebe Ephron, wrote screenplays for classic movies like Carousel and Daddy Long Legs.  Hallie was the last of their four daughters (Nora, Delia, Hallie, Amy) to start writing or, as she calls it, succumb to her genes.
Hallie is the author of nine novels.  Night Night, Sleep Tight is her fourth novel to be named a finalist for the prestigious Mary Higgins Clark Award.  It received a starred review in Publishers Weekly ("Old Hollywood glamour, scandals and lies infuse this captivating thriller").  Christina Baker Kline (The Orphan Train) calls it "Taut, tart and absorbing."

Bridgewater Library
 "Clutter Control II"

Tuesday, March 22, 6:30 pm
Bridgewater Library
15 South St.

Due to the overwhelming response to the first Clutter Control program, we have asked Dave Downs back for his follow-up program,
Clutter Control II.

"We can't resist bargains, sales, yard sales; we buy and receive gifts we don't want," are just a few reasons why we consume twice as much as we did just forty years ago!  Americans spend four times as much shopping as Western Europeans!  You will learn how advertisers use many techniques, such as developing shopping habits, planned obsolescence, slogans, and the use of credit, to motivate people to purchase, purchase, and purchase!  You will leave the library recognizing if you are thoughtful about what and why you acquire items, you will start to reverse the tendency to bury yourself in "treasures!"

With his upbeat and unique approach, Dave Downs explores the many reasons that our drawers, closets and garages get filled with STUFF.  Downs offers helpful hints for managing this difficult problem.  He uses colorful stories throughout the talk to engage as well as inform the audience.  You may recognize a part of yourself in these stories.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgewater Public Library, and is free and open to the public.

 Bridgewater Garden Club
Weds., March 23, at
1 pm - Cole-Yeaton Bridgewater Senior Center
 Walley Krueger Way

The topic will be "Right-Size Flower Garden."  Kerry Ann Mendez will present her ideas for exceptional plants and design solutions for aging and time-pressed gardeners and low-maintenance flower gardens.
The evening meeting will be held on March 28 at 6:30.

The meeting will be about "Yard Birds."  Geoff Dennis, commercial fisherman and published bird photographer, will discuss the ways and means of attracting birds to our backyards.  Meetings are open to the public.

HELP!
The Friends of the Bridgewater Public Library (FOL)  are looking for new board members!

Meeting:
Monday, April 11, at 6:30 pm

FOL has been incorporated for 42 years.  Over the past 10 years, the patrons have helped the FOL raise an average of $19,000 a year.   These funds have been raised through our annual membership drive and other events and sales throughout the year.
The current members of the FOL board are resigning their positions effective June 30, 2016, to allow for a new board to take over the reins of this important community fundraising group.  They have enjoyed their tenure and have made some wonderful friends.
In the absence of a new board, the Friends of the Bridgewater Public Library
will cease to exist on
June 30, 2016.
The following positions for the Friends of the Bridgewater Public Library will need to be filled for the Friends to continue:
    President
    Vice President
    Treasurer
    Secretary
    Fundraising
    Membership
    Publicity

The current board invites any interested parties to attend our next board meeting on Monday, April 11, 2016, 6:30 pm, at the library.  The current bylaws and roles of the board will be explained.  Please contact Rebecca McGrath at 508-697-5193 for further information.

Thank you for your support.
