Historical Tidbit:

Churches of "Old" Bridgewater

"Old" Bridgewater, incorporated in 1656 was divided into four Parishes - East, West, North and South.  The first settlement of Bridgewater in 1651 was in what is now the town of West Bridgewater.  That same year, organized worship meetings were held in people's homes.  By 1661, a "log" meeting house was constructed and its first preacher was Benjamin Butler from Charlestown; the first settled pastor was Rev. James Keith in 1663 and he preached his first service standing upon Pulpit Rock.

In 1716 the South Parish, now the town of Bridgewater, was incorporated as the second precinct.  In 1717, the 2nd Church of Bridgewater was formed.  The first minister was Rev. Benjamin Allen, ordained in 1718.  The current building, built in 1845, was designed in the Greek revival style.  The steeple housed a Paul Revere bell, but in 1954 Hurricane Carol toppled the steeple and the bell was sold to a museum.

In 1720, the 3rd Church of "Old" Bridgewater was raised in the East Parish, now the town of East Bridgewater, and its first minister was Rev. John Angier.  In 1723, the East Parish was constituted as the 3rd precinct.

In the North Parish, now the city of Brockton, a meeting house was erected in 1737, becoming the 4th Church of "Old" Bridgewater.  The North Parish was incorporated into a precinct in 1738.  Rev. John Porter was the first minister of the 4th Church of Bridgewater; ordained in 1740.  Over the years, the 4th Church on Pleasant Street has been known by various names including First Parish Congregational, South Congregational, Porter Congregational, Waldo Congregational.

"Old" Bridgewater, as other Plymouth County communities, gathered at local meeting houses for worship, government business and the needs of their neighbors.  These early collective beginnings laid the foundation of spirit in New England.

SENIOR LEARNING NETWORK COMES TO THE EAST BRIDGEWATER COUNCIL ON AGING!!
Franklin D. Roosevelt Presentation
Monday, March 21st, @ 3:00 pm
Who says learning is just for kids?  The East Bridgewater Council on Aging is excited to join the Senior Learning Network and become the 2nd presentation center in the Northeast!  Senior Learning Network facilitates lifelong learning programs via interactive video conferencing.  Participants have the opportunity to "meet" with presenters from all over the country.  Interested in the Grand Ole Opry, the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, the Smithsonian or NASA?  These are just some of the more than 500 program offerings available.

Our first presentation will be:  Franklin D. Roosevelt - America's 32nd President  This is an introduction to Franklin D. Roosevelt through the context of the challenges he faced and the contributions he made to the world in his time as well as our own.  The focus is on his sense of confidence, his commitment to public service, his battle to overcome the effects of polio, his creation of the New Deal, his leadership in World War II, and his role in creating the United Nations.  Presentation:  30-45 minutes.
Presented by a representative live from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library & Museum in New York.  We are excited about the Senior Learning Network and hope that this will be the first of many live presentations from all over the world!  Please call the COA at 508-378-1610 to sign up!

               Planning for Medicare-Countdown to 65
                                Thursday, March 24th, 2:00 pm
                                        EB Council on Aging

Planning for Medicare-Countdown to 65 is a comprehensive seminar that helps people approaching Medicare eligibility to understand their health insurance options outside of employer-sponsored coverage, whether they are planning to retire or continuing to work.  Many employees need help understanding the coverage options available to them when they approach Medicare eligibility.  This is especially true for employees who plan to retire and are leaving employer-sponsored coverage.  For these employees, retirement may be the first time they do not have a Human Resources representative coordinating, explaining, and negotiating a rate for their health plan premium.
The Planning for Medicare-Countdown to 65 seminar allows attendees to gain the confidence they need to make an informed decision about their individual health coverage options.  Planning for Medicare is a presentation and discussion led by a Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Massachusetts representative.
The topics will include:  An explanation of Medicare Parts A and B Medicare enrollment timeline, Medigap plans that help supplement Medicare coverage, Medicare Advantage plans, such as HMOs and PPOs, Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, Plans and programs available to early retirees, such as COBRA.
Please call the COA at 508-378-1610 to sign up for this presentation.
What is Maundy Thursday?

Last Supper - Leonardo daVinci
Maundy Thursday is observed during Holy Week on the Thursday before Easter. cAlso referred to as "Holy Thursday" or "Great Thursday."  Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper when Jesus shared the Passover meal with his disciples on the night before he was crucified.

Come observe the Last Supper with us:
7 pm, March 24 at either
Union Congregational Church, 105 Pleasant St.
or
East Bridgewater United Methodist Church,
54 N. Central St.

The Last Supper ca. 1520 by Giampietrino, after Leonardo da Vinci, oil on canvas currently in the collection of The Royal Academy of Arts, London.  An accurate full-scale copy.  It includes several lost details, such as Christ's feet and the salt cellar spilled by Judas. Giampietrino is thought to have worked closely with Leonardo when he was in Milan.

Tatami is an East Bridgewater Fab Find!

Nestled in a small plaza on route 18, just north of Forge Pond, Tatami is a cozy Japanese restaurant brimming with tempting aromas and tasty creations.  Recognizing a need for Japanese cuisine on the South Shore, Zhi and his wife Deng opened Tatami Restaurant and Sushi Bar in 2014.  Their creative dishes and consistent quality have gained them quite a following.

From sushi to tempura to chicken wings, Tatami has something for everyone.  They offer amazing lunch specials that include miso soup and salad.  The maki rolls are well-prepared and offer dozens of complex combinations in a variety of raw, cooked and vegetable choices.  They also have non-sushi classics like sesame chicken, fried rice, and crab rangoon.
In fact, crab rangoon wasn't on the original menu, but customers requested them so often that Zhi contacted his uncle (owner of a Chinese food restaurant on the North Shore) for a recipe.  After some adjustments, crab rangoon was added to the menu and has become a customer favorite.
They have a welcoming staff, great food and owners that give their customers what they want.  Enjoy!
