HISTORICAL TIDBIT:

MILITARY RESPONSES PROMPT IN ALL EARLY WARS
Log Company Kitchen www.archives.gov

June 7, 1777, the town of Halifax voted to give $150 for men to fill the quota, provided they enlisted for three years, or during the war.  Among our Revolutionary soldiers was a slave owned by a prominent Halifax family.
It is believed that he was given his freedom at the end of the war.
Among the "Haligonians" who served in the Continental Army were Nathaniel Holmes, James Tillson, Josiah Thompson, Prince Witherel, Consider Pratt, Holmes Sears, Zebediah Thompson, Joshua Farmer, Elisha Faxon, Joseph Tillson, and Richard Bosworth.
In 1812, the town furnished an entire military company, which was commanded by Captain Asa Thompson, popularly known as the "tall Captain." who was six feet, six inches in height.  It is said that people would collect around South Boston Bridge to see him march his company over.
This company was the oldest in the State, chartered by John Hancock in 1792.  It also served in the Civil War.  It was one of the first organizations to respond to the call of President Lincoln, April 16, 1861.
Halifax suffered severely in the Civil War, losing twenty-four men of ninety-six volunteers.  At that time, Halifax had a population of 739.

Monday, April 11th
at 7:00 pm
Albert E. Kiernan Schoolhouse
South Street

After 30 years with the Boston Police Department, rising to the rank of superintendent and chief of detectives, John F. Gallagher retired and turned to writing stories about true local crimes.  His latest venture brought him to Halifax to investigate the Sturtevant Murders. Brothers Thomas Sturtevant and Simeon Sturtevant, along with their housekeeper, Mary Buckley, were brutally murdered in the Old Sturtevant homestead, February 15, 1874.  Come join us as we listen to John tell of his research into this heinous crime perpetrated "just down the street."
He will bring copies of his books, Murder on Broadway: A History of Homicide in Hanover and Arsenic in Assinippi; and The Trial of Jennie May Eaton for the Murder of Her Husband, Rear Admiral Joseph Eaton, in case anyone is interested in those stories as well.
ALL ARE WELCOME
