Bill Brett to speak at Bridgewater Public Library on March 8th @ 6:30 p.m. to discuss his book, "Boston Irish."

508-697-3331   www.bridgewaterpubliclibrary.org

Award-winning photojournalist, Bill Brett, is well-known for his career at The Boston Globe, where he has recently marked his 50th anniversary.  He was the photography-member of the Globe team nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism in 1978 and 1979.  Under Bill's leadership, staff photographer Stan Grossfeld won the only two Pulitzer Prizes ever awarded to the Globe photo staff.  In 1999, Bill became Director of Photography, a position from which he retired in 2001.

"Boston Irish" by Bill Brett with the foreword written by Pulitzer-Prize Winning Author and Historian David McCullough, is Bill's fifth book; all of his titles feature the city and its people.  A collection of more than 260 black-and-white photographs of the people and the city he loves.  It is his most personal book yet.  Building on his four previous books, "Boston, Irish" turns the lens on Bill's own community, the city's Irish Americans.  "Boston, Irish" chronicles and crystallizes a unique period in the city's history.  A time that won't be seen again, inhabited by newly-arrived immigrants and second- and third-generation Irish-Americans.  "Boston Irish" covers every aspect of the region's Irish-American community with portraits and stories ranging from a 99-year-old nun to a colorful funeral home director to an Irish tenor to a New York Times best-selling novelist.  It also explores the full breadth of the Irish immigrant experience, representing those from the Republic and Northern Ireland and both Roman Catholics and Protestants alike.  When the world thinks of Boston, they think of the Irish as the city's bulwark community. What Bill Brett thinks of Boston runs much deeper and can be found on each and every page of "Boston Irish."

Since Mollie's 10th birthday, when she asked her friends to make donations to Massachusetts Vest-a-Dog, a nonprofit organization that provides bulletproof vests and other safety items to police departments for their four-legged officers, Mollie has dedicated her birthdays to taking care of our K-9 crime fighters.
Here are some highlights:
2012 ----> 10th bday - Mollie raised $500 to help provide an over-heat detector/alarm & remote door popper for a Wareham PD K9 cruiser.

2013 ----> 11th bday - Mollie raised over $1100 and provided a vest for K-9 Jari, partner to Trooper Pat Robinson of the MA State Police.

2014 ---->12th bday - Mollie was able to provide a SWAT vest for K-9 Caelen, a over-heat detector/alarm & remote door popper for Officer Jamie LeBretton, as well as K9 First Aid Kits for K-9 Caelen (partner of Ofc Jamie LeBretton), K-9 Cain (partner of Ofc. Marc Higgins), & K-9 Shirley (partner of Sgt. Glowka), all of Plymouth Police Department.  Follow these K9 teams at Plymouth Police Working Dog Foundation!

2015 ----> 13th bday - Mollie was able to provide Bridgewater Police Dept K9 Papi and Officer Steven Kingsley a Cruiser Kennel to insure safe and secure transport of K9, a Cruiser Vault, a locking drawer system, for secure and safe storage for police/k9 equipment, a SWAT vest that is is not only ballistic, but also blunt trauma protective - and it has built-in capabilities without needing additional equipment:  harness, hoist and can easily accommodate a K9 video camera or a overhead light, so air wing/helicopter support can track each K9 team deployed and a First Aid Kit.  This kit costs $200, contains 40 items (almost 400 pieces!), for a handler to help care for his K9 with minor injuries or to stabilize prior to transport in the event of a major injury.  The kits are assembled by MA Vest-a-Dog volunteers.

2016---> 14th bday- $10,000 for essential police K9 agility equipment for local K9's.

We are so proud of Mollie and all she has done!  Please help out her cause by attending her event and / or contributing.

"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king." ~ J.R.R. TolkienThe Fellowship of the Ring.

 "Clutter Control II"

Tuesday, March 22nd, 6:30 pm
Bridgewater Library
15 South St.

Due to the overwhelming response to the first Clutter Control program we have asked Dave Downs back for his follow up program Clutter Control II.

"We can't resist bargains, sales, yard sales; we buy and receive gifts we don't want," are just a few reasons why we consume twice as much as we did just forty years ago!  Americans spend four times as much shopping as Western Europeans!  You will learn how advertisers use many techniques, such as developing shopping habits, planned obsolescence, slogans, and the use of credit, to motivate people to purchase, purchase, and purchase!  You will leave the library recognizing if you are thoughtful about what and why you acquire items, you will start to reverse the tendency to bury yourself in "treasures!"

With his upbeat and unique approach, Dave Downs explores the many reasons that our drawers, closets and garages get filled with STUFF.  Downs offers helpful hints for managing this difficult problem.  Dave uses colorful stories throughout the talk to engage as well as inform the audience.  You may recognize a part of yourself in these stories.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgewater Public Library, is free and open to the public.
