Since Mollie's 10th birthday, when she asked her friends to make donations to Massachusetts Vest-a-Dog, a nonprofit organization that provides bulletproof vests and other safety items to police departments for their four-legged officers, Mollie has dedicated her birthdays to taking care of our K-9 crime fighters. 
Here are some highlights: 
2012 ----> 10th bday- Mollie raised $500 to help provide an over-heat detector/alarm & remote door popper for a Wareham PD K9 cruiser.

2013 ----> 11th bday - Mollie raised over $1100 and provided a vest for K-9 Jari, partner to Trooper Pat Robinson of the MA State Police.

2014 ---->12th bday - Mollie was able to provide a SWAT vest for K-9 Caelen, a over-heat detector/alarm & remote door popper for Officer Jamie LeBretton, as well as K9 First Aid Kits for K-9 Caelen (partner of Ofc Jamie LeBretton), K-9 Cain (partner of Ofc. Marc Higgins), & K-9 Shirley (partner of Sgt. Glowka), all of Plymouth Police Department.  Follow these K9 teams at Plymouth Police Working Dog Foundation!

2015 ----> 13th bday - Mollie was able to provide Bridgewater Police Dept K9 Papi and Officer Steven Kingsley a Cruiser Kennel to insure safe and secure transport of K9, a Cruiser Vault, a locking drawer system, for secure and safe storage for police/k9 equipment, a SWAT vest that is is not only ballistic, but also blunt trauma protective - and it has built-in capabilities without needing additional equipment:  harness, hoist and can easily accommodate a K9 video camera or a overhead light, so air wing/helicopter support can track each K9 team deployed and a First Aid Kit.  This kit costs $200, contains 40 items (almost 400 pieces!), for a handler to help care for his K9 with minor injuries or to stabilize prior to transport in the event of a major injury.  The kits are assembled by MA Vest-a-Dog volunteers.

2016---> 14th bday- $10,000 for essential police K9 agility equipment for local K9's.

Historical Tidbit: 
Wild Turkey     
  
At the time of colonial settlement, the wild turkey was widespread in Massachusetts.  As settlement progressed, hardwood forests were cut and the range of the turkey began to shrink.  The last known native bird was killed in 1851.  After the Civil War, land use patterns began to change.  Farms were abandoned and the forests regenerated.
  
MassWildlife managers learned that trapping and relocating wild birds was a successful restoration strategy.  Biologists captured 37 birds in New York and released them in southern Berkshire County between 1972 and 1973.  The new flock grew, and by the fall of 1978 the estimated population was 1,000 birds.  Turkeys soon ranged throughout most parts of Massachusetts west of the Connecticut River.  In-state transplants of the birds, conducted until 1996, expanded the range of the bird into the central, northeastern and southeastern parts of the state.  Now, the estimated state population is over 18,000 birds!
  
In the 1990's, the wild turkey was named the state's official game bird.  Under careful management, the future looks bright for turkeys; sportsmen, naturalists and other wildlife enthusiasts welcome their return.

Congratulations and Good Luck to our Bridgewater/ Raynham / WB Gymnastics Team that placed fourth in the MIAA Girls South Gymnastics Meet last weekend. 

Our team will advance to MIAA Girls Gymnastics State Championship at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough, and a top-three finish among those eight competing teams will earn a spot at the 22nd annual New England Interscholastic Girls Gymnastics Championship on March 12.  
You go, girls!!!

The BRRHS Gymnastics Team season record was 8 Wins and 1 loss.  Their Coach, Stephen Cudworth, was recently named the Massachusetts High School Gymnastics Coach of the Year!  Congratulations to all of the members of the BRRHS Gymnastics Team and to Coach Cudworth for his tremendous honor.  Great Job!

Everyone is welcome to our open house on March 7 to learn about the upcoming new 10-week training.

Learn about CERT:  a FEMA initiative that educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills.

Come and meet some current team members, ask questions, and learn how you can benefit from the basic training course that begins on Monday, March 28, 2016.  The basic training course will meet Monday evenings from 
6:30-9 pm for 10 weeks (skipping two Monday holidays).  The regional consolidated basic training encompasses seven communities (Raynham, Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, Whitman, Hanson, and
Halifax).  This course will be held at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School.

Award-winning photojournalist, Bill Brett, is well-known for his career at The Boston Globe, where he has recently marked his 50th anniversary.  He was the photography-member of the Globe team nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism in 1978 and 1979.  Under Bill's leadership, staff photographer Stan Grossfeld won the only two Pulitzer Prizes ever awarded to the Globe photo staff.  In 1999, Bill became Director of Photography, a position from which he retired in 2001.

Boston Irish by Bill Brett with the forward written by Pulitzer-Prize Winning Author and Historian David McCullough, is Bill's fifth book; all of his titles feature the city and its people.  A collection of more than 260 black-and-white photographs of the people and the city he loves.  It is his most personal book yet.  Building on his four previous books, Boston, Irish turns the lens on Bill's own community, the city's Irish Americans.  Boston, Irish chronicles and crystallizes a unique period in the city's history.  A time that won't be seen again, inhabited by newly-arrived immigrants and second- and third-generation Irish-Americans.  Boston Irish covers every aspect of the region' s Irish-American community with portraits and stories ranging from a 99-year-old nun to a colorful funeral home director to an Irish tenor to a New York Times best-selling novelist.  It also explores the full breadth of the Irish immigrant experience, representing those from the Republic and Northern Ireland and both Roman Catholics and Protestants alike.  When the world thinks of Boston, they think of the Irish as the city's bulwark community.  What Bill Brett thinks of Boston runs much deeper and can be found on each and every page of Boston Irish.

Make & Take Sign Fundraiser to benefit Angels in America
 
 
Suffering from cabin fever?  Tired of the cold?  Looking for something new and different to do?  Join us at the Make & Take sign party on 

Friday, March 11, at 7 pm to benefit the Bridgewater-based group, Angels in America.  This fun event will be held at the Fireside Restaurant, 30 Bedford Street, Middleboro (near the Rotary).  Eat, drink and create for a great community cause!  Angels in America is a local non profit 501(c)3 charity with a mission of "Making America Stronger, providing hope and encouragement...one good deed at a time."

WINTER FAMILY DANCE SERIES
 
Dance instructor, Sam Baumgarten, will be offering a family dance series on three Sunday afternoons this winter: February 28, April 3, and April 10th, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm
at the Bridgewater Senior Center. 

The series will include a mixture of circle dances, mixers, dances from other countries, and New England squares and contras.  All dances will be instructed, suitable for all ages, and appropriate for adults and children dancing together.  The series is intended to provide enjoyable family fun and the opportunity to experience the joy of rhythmical movement and traditional dancing. As you near retirement, one of the biggest financial decisions you'll need 
to make is when to begin receiving your Social Security retirement benefits.  With pensions disappearing, Social Security remains the major source of guaranteed lifetime retirement income for most Americans, so it's important to take the time to explore your options and make an informed, well-reasoned decision.
This is a free event open to the public.  All are welcome.
 Open air burning 

Brush and forestry debris will be allowed in the Town of Bridgewater from January 15 to May 1 under the following conditions:
  • With the permission of the local fire department
  • Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • When the air is circulating well but winds are light.
  • Not less than 75 feet away from any dwellings.
  • On your own property and as close as possible to the source of material(s) to be burned.
  • Garden hose in close proximity to fire.
  • Small piles, no leafs and monitor fire and extinguish at 4p.m.
  • No unattended fires.
  • Do not be a nuisance to neighbors.
Burning will only be allowed during periods of good atmospheric ventilation, without causing a nuisance to neighbors; burning of brush and trees from commercial land clearing operations is prohibited.  Burning of grass, hay, stumps, building debris and tires is prohibited.  No fires will be left unattended.  Keep a hose in close proximity to fire. Call Fire Station daily for a permit to burn brush (508-697-0900). Their is no charge for a burning permit.
Scholarship Opportunity 

The AAUW Taunton Area Branch is offering a $500 Mary Anderson Memorial Scholarship for college students.  Applicants must be graduates of a high school in Southeastern Massachusetts who will be entering the junior or senior year of college in the fall of 2016 with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and a commitment to improving the lives of women and girls.

BRIDGEWATER RECREATION COMMISSION
YOUTH TRACK AND FIELD PROGRAM

The Bridgewater Recreation Commission will continue to sponsor a spring track and field program for Bridgewater youngsters currently in grades 
5-8.  The program will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 5:30-7:00 p.m., beginning on April 25 and continuing through June 15, and will take place at the Bridgewater State University track and field facility at Swenson Field.  The program will be directed by Sam Baumgarten, Kim Larcom, and Joe Gillis.  Sign-up forms are being distributed through the schools, and completed applications should be returned to the Recreation Commission.  The form will also posted on the Town website, Spring Track Registration
