Buzz Around West Bridgewater

Congratulations and Good Luck to our Bridgewater/ Raynham / West Bridgewater Gymnastics Team that placed fourth in the MIAA Girls South Gymnastics Meet last weekend. 

Our team will advance to MIAA Girls Gymnastics State Championship at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough, and a top-three finish among those eight competing teams will earn a spot at the 22nd annual New England Interscholastic Girls Gymnastics Championship on March 12. 
You go, girls!!!

The BRR / WB HS Gymnastics Team season record was 8 Wins and 1 loss.  Their Coach, Stephen Cudworth, was recently named the Massachusetts High School Gymnastics Coach of the Year!  Congratulations to all of the members of the BRRHS Gymnastics Team and to Coach Cudworth for his tremendous honor.  Great Job!

Historical Tidbit : 
Where is the Centre of Old Bridgewater?
  
For some inexplicable reason, the settlement of Bridgewater had failed to fix and establish a centre, despite frequent and pressing admonitions by the court of New Plymouth.
  
In 1656, Bridgewater had incorporated into a distinct township, without a center or definite boarders, when a grant of 300 acres was made to Capt. Miles Standish.  He was given the land, provided it came not within the court's grant of Bridgewater.  Because of this, it became urgently necessary that the centre of Bridgewater should be fixed in order to ascertain its limits and extent.  When Southworth knew where Bridgewater ended, then he could claim his land.
  
Finally in 1659, the centre was marked by a White Oak Tree, small in stature, standing on high ground.  This location now has a stone marker on the East and West Bridgewater line along the south side of East Center Street.  The tree also bore the initials C.S.  This stood for Constant Southworth of the New Plymouth court committee.  The Plymouth Court shows no entry recorded until 1695 regarding the marking of the centre.  In the end, it was the Court of New Plymouth not Bridgewater itself establishing the centre of Bridgewater township!

Everyone is welcome to our open house on March 7 to learn about the upcoming new 10-week training.

Learn about CERT:  a FEMA initiative that educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills.

Come and meet some current team members, ask questions, and learn how you can benefit from the basic training course that begins on Monday, March 28, 2016.  The basic training course will meet Monday evenings from 6:30-9 pm for 10 weeks (skipping two Monday holidays).  The regional consolidated basic training encompasses seven communities (Raynham, Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, Whitman, Hanson, and Halifax).  This course will be held at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School.

The AAUW Taunton Area Branch is offering a $500 Mary Anderson Memorial Scholarship for college students.  Applicants must be graduates of a high school in Southeastern Massachusetts who will be entering the junior or senior year of college in the fall of 2016 with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and a commitment to improving the lives of women and girls.
