Historical  Tidbit:

MILITARY RESPONSES PROMPT IN ALL EARLY WARS

June 7, 1777, the town of Halifax voted to give $150 for men to fill the quota, provided they enlisted for three years, or during the war.  Among the Revolutionary soldiers was a slave owned by a prominent Halifax family.  It is believed that he was given his freedom at the end of the war.  Among the "Haligonians" who served in the Continental Army were Nathaniel Holmes, James Tillson, Josiah Thompson, Prince Witherel, Consider Pratt, Holmes Sears, Zebediah Thompson, Joshua Farmer, Elisha Faxon, Joseph Tillson, and Richard Bosworth.

In 1812, the town furnished an entire military company, which was commanded by Captain Asa Thompson, popularly known as the "tall Captain," who was six feet, six inches in height, and it is said that people would collect around South Boston Bridge to see him march his company over.  This company was the oldest in the State, chartered by John Hancock in 1792, also serving in the Civil War.  It was one of the first organizations to respond to the call of President Lincoln, April 16, 1861.
Halifax suffered severely in the Civil War, losing twenty-four men out of a population of 739, of ninety-six volunteers.

Halifax Community Joins Together to
Search for Missing Dog

On Tuesday, February 2, an 8-year old Jack Russell Terrier mix named Indy escaped from a Halifax home he was staying at while his owner was in Florida visiting family.  Jen Sowers, Indy's owner, posted on the Halifax Locals Facebook page reporting that he had escaped and asked for local residents to be on the lookout for him.

From that moment on, hundreds of people in the Halifax community had Indy on their minds and they stepped up to help in many different ways.  Whether it be driving around looking for Indy, helping to put up flyers, saying prayers, or posting encouraging words on the Facebook post, the whole community worked together to get him home safely.

The search continued for 6 days.  There were some sightings of Indy during that time, but people were unable to catch up with him as he is very fast, smart and very afraid of people.  With a major blizzard coming into Halifax on Monday morning, everyone was starting to worry about Indy being out in the storm without shelter.

On Monday morning, Feb 8, Jen received a call from Melinda.  Melinda's two dogs, Zeke and Louie, got her attention whining and crying, unusual for them.   She went to see what was wrong, and they led her to Indy in her Halifax back yard.  Indy was soaking wet and shaking, but he would not go to anyone.   So they let Zeke and Louie out of the house, and the dogs led him safely into their home.  In the midst of heavy snow, Jen rushed over to Melinda's to pick Indy up and quickly took him to the closest vet.  He was covered in ticks, but he only suffered a few cuts, scrapes and torn-up paws. Jen says, "Louie and Indy are both rescue dogs, who must share some sort of bond that led them to find each other out there... Rescue dogs are the best!"

When the good news was announced on Facebook, hundreds of people expressed their relief and commented with words of encouragement and love, and many expressed how proud they were to be a part of this caring community. Jen would like everyone to know:  "I'm so grateful for the help with spreading his story, to those who searched for him psychically, hung fliers, emailed news stations or saved our number in your phones in case you saw him.  I'm so impressed with Halifax, especially since I'm not a local; I'm from Medford.  I didn't know anything or anyone in Halifax except my friends who were watching him, and now ...I have met some truly amazing and beyond caring people.  I could NEVER have imagined the support we got; I have no words for it.  We feel very, very lucky to have been able to come through this possible tragedy with a happy ending.  I don't know what I would have done without him!  Thank you, everyone!  I'm so happy and relieved!"
Indy with his "sister" ginger.

"I have to also thank Dawn of Canine Etiquette for her dedication to helping me track Indy's whereabouts at all hours of the day and night, Lisa from Missing Dogs MA for her knowledge, resources and support, and K-9 recreation for their donation of a spa day for when Indy is feeling better!  I hope... this happy ending can enlighten and motivate the people of Halifax... and beyond to think twice about helping spread the word about missing dogs.  As seen in this case, it really helped! And I encourage anyone who sees a stray or lost looking dog to call animal control!"
