Historical Tidbit :

West Bridgewater Public Library

From A Collection of Treasured Items from West Bridgewater History:

"In 1879, Francis E. Howard, a citizen deeply interested in the welfare of the town, offered to give $500 toward founding a free Public Library, provided that an equal amount was raised by its citizens for that purpose within a definite time.  Great interest in the project was aroused and a larger sum than was specified was secured by subscription.
A committee of eight, chosen by the town for establishing the Library, secured a room in the old post office building; purchased, after careful selection, 736 volumes; received by donation 135 books of value and
opened the Library to the public in October of that year, with Miss Mary L. Perkins as librarian.  To provide better accommodations, the Library was removed in 1881 to the Howard Seminary building, in which a room had been offered by the trustees of the Howard Fund, until the school should have need of it."

Greenways are corridors of land and water and the natural, cultural, and recreational resources they link together.  A riverfront walkway, a bicycle path, an urban walking trail connecting historical sites and neighborhood parks, a wildlife migration corridor, and a series of open spaces joined by trails are all examples of Greenways.  The Nunckatessett Greenway is a network of trail spurs connecting the Town River and Bay Circuit Trail to municipal and state conservation areas, historical sites and urban centers, school districts and Bridgewater State University, the Hockomock Swamp and the Wild & Scenic Taunton River.

Each year the Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsors the Voice of Democracy audio essay contest to students at the local, state and national levels.  For many years the Social Studies Department has co-coordinated and submitted student entries.  This year's topic was "My Vision For America" and was judged by members of VFW Post 2125, which encompasses all three of the Bridgewaters.

This year's winners were:

First place:  John Immar

Second place:  Amelia Norton

Third place:  Kyle Carr

Congratulations to our three winners and to all of our students who worked hard on their entries. We are proud of all of you.
