Historical Tidbit:

Special historical tidbit with memories of one of our native sons, Arthur L. Leland.  Arthur was 76  when he passed away on July 3, 2013.

Born Sept. 12, 1936 in East Bridgewater, Ma, Art was the son of the late Robert A. and Frances A. (Stearns) Leland and the grandson of the original owners of Leland Farm.  He was the oldest of Bob Leland's children (all boys).
Art and his brothers and cousins worked at the farm for many years when they were young.  He worked hard.  He fed the chickens and candled the eggs in "Grandma" Leland's basement room.  He would hold the eggs up to a special light which showed any abnormality in the eggs, especially blood spots.  Those eggs would get rejected and tossed out.  Leland Farm sold only top quality eggs.  Art also worked in the fields when haying time rolled around.  His dad would drive the tractor and Art would toss the hay onto the wagon with his pitch fork.  Art would also do silo work.  As the equipment would dump material into the silo, Art would spread the silage around, again using a pitch fork.  I don't know how he stood the pungent odor!  Art was a dedicated farm worker, for sure.

The service was held Sept 7, 2013, at the Union Congregational Church.  Art is buried out back of the church in the Leland family plots that Grandma Leland bought years ago for the family.

These are pleasant memories from my childhood in East Bridgewater.  I remember picking potatoes out back of the farm, receiving 5 cents a bushel!

Respectfully submitted, Betty (Belknap) Stirling

Work Permits for Teens

WORK PERMITS are available in the main office at the Junior-Senior High School.  If your child is 14-15 years old, they will need additional paperwork filled out by their doctor before we can issue a permit.  We have that paperwork here so it can be picked up anytime the office is open.  Students who are 16-17 years old just need to bring a copy of their birth certificate and we can type out the permit while they wait.   For both age groups, they will need to have the job or promise of employment before we can give them the permit.

Each year the Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsors the Voice of Democracy audio essay contest to students at the local, state and national levels.  For many years the Social Studies Department has co-coordinated and submitted student entries.  This year's topic was "My Vision For America" and was judged by members of VFW Post 2125, which encompasses all three of the Bridgewaters.

This year's winners were:

First place:  John Immar

Second place:  Amelia Norton

Third place:  Kyle Carr

Congratulations to our three winners and to all of our students who worked hard on their entries, we are proud of all of you.
