Historical Tidbit:
EB Scouting Memories

My aunts, Miriam Houghton and Frances Leland, were involved in scouting for many years.  In 2nd grade, we "Brownies" met weekly at my Aunt Miriam's home in Elmwood.   Our leader for third and fourth grades was Mabel Ballentine, our teacher at Elmwood School.   In fifth grade we became Girl Scouts and met in the Methodist Church basement.   Our first badge was at the home of Alice Craig of "Westdale,"  for  our cooking and hostess badges.   Knitting/darning badge was at Mrs. Feeney's on Bedford Street.   I remember earning my sewing badge at Mrs. Anderson's home on Spear Avenue, followed by Bird and Tree badge at Mrs. Bartlett's home on Plymouth Street.   Mrs. Bartlett took us to Arnold Arboretum as part of our Tree badge requirement.   I earned my photography badge at Mr. Miller's home on Plymouth Street.
Most of us earned our Curved Bar and attended many "Court of Awards" ceremonies.   We "graduated" to Senior Scouts when in high school and met at Mrs. Joan Geary's home on Keith Avenue.   During that time, we enjoyed outings to Camp Storrow in Waltham and a weekend at Camp Squanto in Plymouth.
Mrs. Geary also took us to Logan Airport, where we toured one of the planes on the tarmac.
1946-47 Meeting at Feeney's home to work on knitting badge. Front row: Millie Carpenter,  Betty Belknap, Lois Glover. Back row:  Audrey Hirtle,  Shirley Williams,  Sandra Doten, Carol Craig, Joanne Locke, Sally Flagg,  Virginia Feeney
My close friend, Sandra (Doten) Harlan and I were the only ones who remained in Senior
Scouts during our senior year of high school.  During those years, we enjoyed marching in all the parades and considered it an honor to carry the American Flag and the troop flag.  We were Oak Troop #1 in East Bridgewater.

Sincerely,
Betty (Belknap) Stirling

Forum on Islam & Syrian Refugees
Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016
at 11:30 am

 First Parish Church
50 School St., Bridgewater
(Note change in location.)

All are encouraged to come learn more about Islam from an Imam, meet Syrian refugees who live among us, and gain a better understanding of the Syrian crisis.  We hope to seed understanding and goodwill.

Some focus-issues will be:
(a)  What is Islam; what does the current ISIS movement have to do with Islam?
(b)  What is the civil war in Syria about?  Who is fighting whom?  What is at stake?
(c)  Why are residents fleeing Syria?
(d)  What is the U.S.'s refugee screening process -- what precautions are taken to reduce likelihood of terrorists entering the U.S.?
(e)  How can we in this community help -- in everyday life as neighbors; in town life as responsible citizens; in our communities as spokespeople, financial supporters, or hosts?

Speakers:
Muslim representative -- Imam Abdul Rahman - The value of human life and security, and the commonalities between religions.
Legal representative -- Legal official - explain the rigorous vetting process.
Refugee representatives -- Ahmad and his father, and another refugee family.
Nonprofit Organization Fundraiser -- Dr. Abdul Fattah Elshaar, Syrian American Medical Society.
