Bridgewater's Student Wins Local Lions Peace Poster Contest

Bridgewater's Jaylee Borges Peace Poster

Jaylee Borges, a grade eight student at Bridgewater Middle School won a local competition sponsored by the Bridgewater Academy Lions Club with her peace poster.  Borges's poster was among more than 375,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 28th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest.  Lions Clubs International sponsored the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

Her poster was selected by Bridgewater Academy Lions Club Board of Directors for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, "Share Peace."  Bridgewater Academy Lions Club President, Beverly Saccocia, said she was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at Bridgewater Middle School and their art teacher, Ms. Kerry Bean.  "It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them.  I'm so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions."  Borges and 34 other students will be honored for their participation by the Bridgewater Academy Lions Club.

Jaylee's poster  won the district competition at the District 33-S Mid-Winter Conference in Hyannis in January.  Congratulations to her for winning the district!

There were multiple district and international rounds of competition, where an international grand prize winner will be declared.

Last Year's winners can be found at peace-poster-contest/ppc-winners
At the end of February the 2015 winners will be posted.

Historical Tidbit :
Do you know your Bridgewater Villages?

Village - noun - a settlement usually larger than a hamlet and smaller than a town; an incorporated minor municipality.
Our geography couldn't support large-scale farming, so villages had a more compact design than other colonies of early America.  The essence of each village was centered around the particular commercial / industrial goods it produced.  Homes were close together and each village had its common areas, such as a meeting house, woodlands and pasture land.  It's here we find, still to this day, our unique tight-knit community bond.  The term "village" is often interchanged with "localities, districts, neighborhoods or sections."

Bridgewater villages are:  Bridgewater Center, Paper Mill Village, Scotland, South Bridgewater, Stanley, and Pratt Town.

Forum on Islam & Syrian Refugees
Sunday, Feb 7 at 11:30am

Location:  St. Basil's Chapel (10 Shaw Road, Bridgewater)

All are encouraged to come learn more about Islam from an Imam, meet Syrian refugees who live among us, and gain a better understanding of the Syrian crisis.  We hope to seed understanding and goodwill.

Some focus-issues will be:
(a)  What is Islam; what does the current ISIS movement have to do with Islam?
(b)  What is the civil war in Syria about?  Who is fighting whom?  What is at stake?
(c)  Why are residents fleeing Syria?
(d)  What is the U.S.'s refugee screening process -- what precautions are taken to reduce likelihood of terrorists entering the U.S.?
(e)  How can we in this community help -- in everyday life as neighbors; in town life as responsible citizens; in our communities as spokespeople, financial supporters, or hosts?

Speakers:
Muslim representative -- Imam Abdul Rahman - The value of human life and security, and the commonalities between religions.
Legal representative -- Legal official - explain the rigorous vetting process.
Refugee representatives -- Ahmad and his father, and another refugee family.
Nonprofit Organization Fundraiser -- Dr. Abdul Fattah Elshaar, Syrian American Medical Society.

Mass 2-1-1 Day is recognized on Wednesday, February 11th (2/11), by United Way and its community partners.

Mass 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, multilingual information resource and referral program, made possible by sponsorships from United Way, available 24/7 365 days a year.  By dialing 2-1-1 from any telephone, individuals can connect with trained, certified call-takers who will assist with information and referrals for important non-emergency health and human services, as well as volunteer opportunities.  These services are also available online by visiting www.Mass211help.org

United Way of Greater Attleboro/Taunton, Inc., (UWGAT) has been a proud sponsor and supporter of Mass 2-1-1 from its inception in 2006.  Some examples of accessible service providers:

  • Basic Human Needs:  food banks, soup kitchens, housing; shelters, rent and utility assistance.
  • Physical and Mental Health:  state health insurance programs, medical information lines, local and state health outbreak information, crisis intervention services, support groups, counseling, drug / alcohol intervention/ rehabilitation programs.
  • Employment:  financial assistance, job training, transportation and educational/vocational programs.
  • Government benefits and services
  • Elder and Individual with Disabilities:  adult day programs, respite / home health care, transportation and other support programs.
  • Children, Youth and Families:  childcare referrals to licensed home and site based providers, after school programs, Head Start programs, family resource centers, summer camps and recreational programs, mentoring, tutoring, and protective services.
Mass 2-1-1 partners with MEMA (Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency) as the official emergency call-center for Massachusetts; in the event of a state-wide disaster, severe weather, and public health and safety concerns.  Mass 2-1-1 is NOT for emergencies; it serves as a valuable information and referral service for non 911 emergencies.

As your local United Way, we are advocating so everyone is aware of this critical community resource.  You do not need to know exactly the type of service you need; just knowing you do need assistance will help call takers best assess which resources to share.  For more information about Mass
2-1-1, please visit their website www.Mass211.org.

Paul Monti's Raynham home recently sustained a fire and the house has significant amount of damage and the Montis now need our help.

Mr. Paul Monti's son Jared (1994 graduate of Bridgewater- Raynham High School) gave his life for our country and his story inspired Lee Brice's, "I drive your truck."  His son served our country in the most heroic way and was given the Medal of Honor by our president.  Now, Paul Monti's house suffered from fire damage and he needs our help.

On June 21, 2006, Sargent Jared Monti served as the assistant leader of a 16-man patrol and leader of a weapons forward observer team tasked with gathering intelligence in Gowardesh, Nuristan Province, in northeastern Afghanistan.  The team established a small base on a ridge to support a larger Army operation in the valley below.  When the larger operation was delayed, Sgt. Monti's team ran low on provisions.  The helicopter that brought supplies revealed the team's position.

That evening, the patrol was attacked by a group of at least 60 insurgents, who had established two positions on a wooded ridge about 50 yards above the patrol and attempted to outflank Sgt. Monti and his team.  The Americans took cover and returned fire, and Sgt. Monti radioed for artillery and close air support.  When Specialist Brian J. Bradbury was severely wounded and left lying in the open between the enemy and the team's position, Monti made three attempts to rescue him before he was struck by a grenade.

Sgt. Jared Monti is reported by comrades to have made his peace with God and asked Sgt. Cunningham to tell his parents he loved them; he died moments later.  At about the same time, the artillery and air support for which he had previously called for began hitting the enemy position, killing 22 of the attackers and dispersing the rest. (Medal of Honor Narrative Jared Monti)

The Monti family has given so much to our country.  In their time of need, the FireFighter's Wives Association has spearheaded this effort to take care of them in the wake of their house fire. Firefighter's Wives Facebook Page
