"Water Waste Plant Sludge:
Our Community's Dilemma"
 presented by Mr. John DeLano,
 West Bridgewater Conservation Commission Agent.

Monday, February 1, at 7:00 p.m.

Mr. DeLano's talk will include the topic of farmers' use of Septic Sludge as a supplemental nutrient for their field crops.  He will explore the permitting of the use of sludge by MA DEP, the regulatory requirements for the use of sludge, and the potential impact of the use of sludge on the community.  The presentation will highlight the dilemma facing the residents of our community, the town government leaders, and the farmers themselves due to the land application of the sludge.

Mr. DeLano has 21 years of Conservation Agent experience.  As West Bridgewater's Conservation Commission Agent, he has facilitated the meetings of the West Bridgewater 2012 Conservation Commission Sludge Study Committee.  Since 2014, he has also served on the W.B. Open Space and Recreation Committee and currently serves as secretary.

Mr. DeLano is a Registered Environmental Specialist, a Registered Sanitarian, and a Municipal Wetland Consultant.  He has been working for conservation commissions since 1994 and has been involved in the public health sector since 1997, when he became an elected member of the Board of Health in Halifax, MA.  He has served as chairman since 1997.

Forum on Islam & Syrian Refugees
Sunday, January 24th
Time:  12PM
Location:  St. Basil's Chapel (10 Shaw Road, Bridgewater)

All are encouraged to come learn more about Islam from an Imam, meet Syrian refugees who live among us, and gain a better understanding of the Syrian crisis. The hope is that by seeding understanding and goodwill, we can help foster a hospitable culture.

Some focus-issues will be:
(a)  What is Islam; what does the current ISIS movement have to do with Islam?
(b)  What is the civil war in Syria about?  Who is fighting whom?  What is at stake?
(c)  Why are residents fleeing Syria?
(d)  What is the U.S's refugee screening process -- what precautions are taken to reduce likelihood of terrorists entering the U.S.?
(e)  How can we in this community help -- in everyday life as neighbors; in town life as responsible citizens; in our communities as spokespeople, financial supporters, or hosts?

Speakers:
Muslim representative -- Imam Abdul Rahman - The value of human life and security, and the commonalities between religions.
Legal representative -- Legal official - explain the rigorous vetting process.
Refugee representatives -- Ahmad and his father, and another refugee family.
Nonprofit Organization Fundraiser -- Dr. Abdul Fattah Elshaar, Syrian American Medical Society.

Winter Reading Challenge at the Howard School:
The Quest is on for a Kindle Fire!

The quest is on to read and make every minute count in a quest to win a Kindle Fire.  The Howard School Winter Reading Challenge launched January 11 of this week and will run until March 19, 2016.

childrens-bookshelf.jpg Students are asked to read as many minutes as possible outside of school using printed texts, e-readers, and/or myON, and record their minutes on the school-provided reading logs.  Reading Specialist Brandi Richmond said the reading log does not need to be used for minutes read using myON.  (It's automatically logged.)

"Students will receive a ticket for every 100 minutes completed on the reading log sheet in a week," said Richmond, "and students should pass the reading logs in on Fridays with a parent signature."  In addition, students will receive a ticket for each 100 minutes read per week using myON.

"Reading develops and exercises the mind and imagination and is how we discover new things," said Richmond.  "It is fundamental to function in today's society and in finding a good job," said Richmond, "and reading is important because words, both written and spoken, are the building blocks of life."

Richmond said the school-wide goal is to read 240,000 minutes.  Each leading class per grade level which reads the most minutes earns a special reward, and each grade level which reads the most minutes using myON also earns a special reward.
The tickets represent chances to win a Kindle Fire, generously donated by Horace Mann Insurance Company.

Happy reading everybody, and good luck!

Please Help Us Fix the Damage of Vandalism at
Pleasant Hill Cemetery

For the 5th time since 2012, and the third time in 6 months, the 3+ acre historic non-profit Pleasant Hill Cemetery in West Bridgewater has been targeted by heartless vandals.

This New Year's Eve spree caused by far the largest amount of damage, with 33 headstones and monuments in 23 family lots toppled and over half sustaining breakage.  Two extremely large monuments, estimated to weigh 4,000 pounds, were also toppled in pieces.  Many of the smashed headstones are irreparable.  This includes the oldest stone in the cemetery dating back to 1751.

A large portion of the lots desecrated were those of Veterans, such as the final resting place of a Civil War POW who died in Andersonville Prison.  Due to the age of the cemetery, there were only 7 current lot owners on file to contact out of the 33 stones affected, leaving the remaining stones unrepresented in terms of repair and/or replacement.  The 3 episodes in 2015 all involved toppling of stones, as well as smashing of urns, statues, and flags.  Two prior incidents in 2012 and 2013 involved graffiti on over 23 total stones, signage and shed.  Many of those stones could not be cleaned due to the porous material used for headstones in that era.

Vandalism in a Cemetery is a Felony under Massachusetts Law, and we urge anyone with information to contact the WBPD or the Cemetery, even if it is anonymously, to help us put an end to this destruction of our Town and family history.

The private cemetery is run entirely by volunteers and more hands are always welcome; please help us personally or financially.

Check out our gofundme page:  A fundraising page was set up earlier this year, and continues to accept donations, at  www.gofundme.com/pleasanthillcem

The Board of Library Trustees of the West Bridgewater Public Library have voted to align the snow emergency plans for the library with the schools. When the schools are closed due to snow, the public library will also be closed.  If the snow ends mid-morning, we may have a late opening, but only on days we would stay open until 7 p.m.
If a snow storm hits on a Saturday, we will determine a safe opening time depending on the snow fall and road conditions.

Public safety is of the utmost importance to us and we encourage patrons to use discretion with venturing out into winter weather.

Pet Safety in Winter Weather

The winter season is here with the cold, snow and ice.  When snow is on the ground, commercially prepared snow and ice melting products are often used.  Most ice melting compounds contain salt products that can damage vegetation and hard surfaces and are toxic to people and their pets.  Most people are not aware of the dangers that deicing solutions pose to pets.

Many ice melting salt products contain sodium chloride.  With exposure of the salt to water and low temperatures, a reaction occurs that causes melting with temperatures generated up to 175°F.  This reaction can burn the pet's foot pads and skin with contact and can burn the mouth and rest of the GI tract with ingestion. Dogs and cats can ingest the salt by licking snow or icy surfaces or by licking their paws after being outside and picking up the ice melting pellets between their toes.

Salt toxicity is also a possibility with the salt-based ice melting products.  Ingestion of salt can result in high blood sodium concentration leading to thirst, vomiting, lethargy, anorexia, kidney damage and possible neurological signs, including seizures, coma and even death.  It is difficult to know how much salt is a "toxic dose."  Even small amounts of pure salt can be dangerous to a pet if ingested.

Salt-based ice melting products are the least expensive.  There are other, more expensive formulations that contain potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium carbonate or calcium magnesium acetate. The potassium and magnesium salts are less toxic if ingested, but can still burn the foot pads. The calcium-based products do not create an exothermic reaction, but still can be drying to the skin surface with exposure.
Here are steps that the pet owner can take to minimize risk for his or her pet:
  • Monitor/modify your pet's behavior to minimize the risk of salt exposure.
  • Use waterproof pet boots during winter walks with dogs.
  • Wash off the pet's feet, abdomen and chest after being outside with exposure to deicing salts.
  • Use sand, crushed cinder or cat litter to provide traction on icy pavement being aware that these products will not melt the snow or ice.
  • Immediately remove slush and dissolved deicing product after the snow and ice have melted enough.
  • Seek veterinary care if you suspect foot pad or skin burning from salt exposure or that your pet has ingested a significant amount of a salt product.

Nomination papers are now available at the Town Clerk's office.  The last day to submit nomination papers to the Board of Registrars is February 22, 2016.
These positions will be voted on at the Sat., April 9, 2016, Town Elections:

three LIBRARY TRUSTEES for three years;

two  SCHOOL COMMITTEE members for three years;
