Forum on Islam & Syrian Refugees
Sunday, January 24th
Time:  12PM
Location:  St. Basil's Chapel (10 Shaw Road, Bridgewater)

All are encouraged to come learn more about Islam from an Imam, meet Syrian refugees who live among us, and gain a better understanding of the Syrian crisis.  We hope to seed understanding and goodwill.

Some focus-issues will be:
(a)  What is Islam; what does the current ISIS movement have to do with Islam?
(b)  What is the civil war in Syria about?  Who is fighting whom?  What is at stake?
(c)  Why are residents fleeing Syria?
(d)  What is the U.S.'s refugee screening process -- what precautions are taken to reduce likelihood of terrorists entering the U.S.?
(e)  How can we in this community help -- in everyday life as neighbors; in town life as responsible citizens; in our communities as spokespeople, financial supporters, or hosts?

Speakers:
Muslim representative -- Imam Abdul Rahman - The value of human life and security, and the commonalities between religions.
Legal representative -- Legal official - explain the rigorous vetting process.
Refugee representatives -- Ahmad and his father, and another refugee family.
Nonprofit Organization Fundraiser -- Dr. Abdul Fattah Elshaar, Syrian American Medical Society.

Historical Tidbit :
The seat of government for the Town of Bridgewater was in what we now know as West Bridgewater for the first 200 years.  Following the establishment in the 1830's, of the four new towns of East Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, Brockton and Bridgewater,  we needed a place to meet.

History does not tell us why this building was privately built, but it served as our first town hall on the site of the present New Jerusalem Church for about 10 years.  In 1843, our present town hall was erected and this building faded into history.

The building was used briefly for a few years, in the 1840's, as the first home of Bridgewater State College.  In the early 1870's the building was moved or disassembled and replaced with the present New Jerusalem Church.

Respectfully submitted, David Moore

Local Author to Speak at Bridgewater Public Library

Bo McIntyre will visit on January 26 at 6:30 pm to discuss his book, The Long Way Home, A journey from South Boston to redemption.

"Southie was much more than a mere dot on a map; it was a state of mind."  So begins McIntyre's memoir, an insightful book that chronicles his journey from the streets of South Boston to the cross.  In 1985 McIntyre purchased an ill-fated liquor store from Whitey Bulger.  Twenty tough, tenuous years followed filled with Grand Jury appearances, a raid on the liquor store by the DEA, and ongoing investigations.  During this arduous time, McIntyre knew Bulger personally.  The book depicts Whitey Bulger in a slightly different light because their relationship wasn't dependent on crime.  In a surprising twist McIntyre was "born again" at 60 years old in a spiritual experience that resolved much of life's early anguish and renewed hope.  www.bomcintyre.com

The event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgewater Public Library, is free and open to the public and will include a book signing.

Paul Monti's Raynham home recently sustained a fire and the house has significant amount of damage and the Montis now need our help.

Mr. Paul Monti's son Jared (1994 graduate of Bridgewater- Raynham High School) gave his life for our country and his story inspired Lee Brice's, "I drive your truck."  His son served our country in the most heroic way and was given the Medal of Honor by our president.  Now, Paul Monti's house suffered from fire damage and he needs our help.

On June 21, 2006, Sargent Jared Monti served as the assistant leader of a 16-man patrol and leader of a weapons forward observer team tasked with gathering intelligence in Gowardesh, Nuristan Province, in northeastern Afghanistan.  The team established a small base on a ridge to support a larger Army operation in the valley below.  When the larger operation was delayed, Sgt. Monti's team ran low on provisions.  The helicopter that brought supplies revealed the team's position.

That evening, the patrol was attacked by a group of at least 60 insurgents, who had established two positions on a wooded ridge about 50 yards above the patrol and attempted to outflank Sgt. Monti and his team.  The Americans took cover and returned fire, and Sgt. Monti radioed for artillery and close air support.  When Specialist Brian J. Bradbury was severely wounded and left lying in the open between the enemy and the team's position, Monti made three attempts to rescue him before he was struck by a grenade.

Sgt. Jared Monti is reported by comrades to have made his peace with God and asked Sgt. Cunningham to tell his parents he loved them; he died moments later.  At about the same time, the artillery and air support for which he had previously called for began hitting the enemy position, killing 22 of the attackers and dispersing the rest. (Medal of Honor Narrative Jared Monti)

The Monti family has given so much to our country.  In their time of need, the FireFighter's Wives Association has spearheaded this effort to take care of them in the wake of their house fire. Firefighter's Wives Facebook Page

Pet Safety in Winter Weather

The winter season is here with the cold, snow and ice.  When snow is on the ground, commercially prepared snow and ice melting products are often used.  Most ice melting compounds contain salt products that can damage vegetation and hard surfaces and are toxic to people and their pets.  Most people are not aware of the dangers that
deicing solutions pose to pets.

Many ice melting salt products contain sodium chloride.  With exposure of the salt to water and low temperatures, a reaction occurs that causes melting with temperatures generated up to 175°F.  This reaction can burn the pet's foot pads and skin with contact and can burn the mouth and rest of the GI tract with ingestion. Dogs and cats can ingest the salt by licking snow or icy surfaces or by licking their paws after being outside and picking up the ice melting pellets between their toes.

Salt toxicity is also a possibility with the salt-based ice melting products.  Ingestion of salt can result in high blood sodium concentration leading to thirst, vomiting, lethargy, anorexia, kidney damage and possible neurological signs including seizures, coma and even death. It is difficult to know how much salt is a "toxic dose."  Even small amounts of pure salt can be dangerous to a pet if ingested.

Salt-based ice melting products are the least expensive.  There are other, more expensive formulations that contain potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium carbonate or calcium magnesium acetate. The potassium and magnesium salts are less toxic if ingested, but can still burn the foot pads. The calcium-based products do not create an exothermic reaction but still can be drying to the skin surface with exposure.
Here are steps that the pet owner can take to minimize risk for his or her pet:
  • Monitor/modify your pet's behavior to minimize the risk of salt exposure.
  • Use waterproof pet boots during winter walks with dogs.
  • Wash off the pet's feet, abdomen and chest after being outside with exposure to deicing salts.
  • Use sand, crushed cinder or cat litter to provide traction on icy pavement being aware that these products will not melt the snow or ice.
  • Immediately remove slush and dissolved deicing product after the snow and ice have melted enough.
  • Seek veterinary care if you suspect foot pad or skin burning from salt exposure or that your pet has ingested a significant amount of a salt product.

Open air burning of brush and forestry debris will be allowed in the Town of Bridgewater from January 15 to May 1 under the following conditions:
  • With the permission of the local fire department
  • Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • When the air is circulating well but winds are light.
  • Not less than 75 feet away from any dwellings.
  • On your own property and as close as possible to the source of material(s) to be burned.
  • Garden hose in close proximity to fire.
  • Small piles, no leaves and monitor fire and extinguish at 4 p.m.
  • No unattended fires.
  • Do not be a nuisance to neighbors.
Burning will only be allowed during periods of good atmospheric ventilation, without causing a nuisance to neighbors; burning of brush and trees from commercial land clearing operations is prohibited. Burning of grass, hay, stumps, building debris and tires is prohibited.  No fires will be left unattended.  Keep a hose in close proximity to fire.  Call Fire Station daily for a permit to burn brush (508-697-0900).  There is no charge for a burning permit.
