WB News:  NEW FILM STYLE LOOKS LIKE NBA GAME

Sports are looking a bit more like the pro games this week, thanks to a new multi-camera format designed to capture the plays from all angles.  This week's basketball home game opener-girls' varsity, followed by boys' varsity, was an opportune moment for TV Production juniors to hone their skills with multi-camera format.
"This is our first multi-cam production from the gym," said TV Production teacher and West Bridgewater Cable Access TV Coordinator, Scott Cray.  "I'll be directing and I have 10 (maybe 12) students involved.  We have four cameras for each game, two play-by-play, one sideline reporter, and one technical director back at the studio with me (one of my best techie students who is a freshman)," said Cray.
"From a broadcast standpoint, it'll be our biggest production for a sporting event in the nine years I've been here," said Cray. "Can you tell I'm excited!"

The first crew began camera set-up in the gym at 5:00 p.m. for the 6:00 p.m. game.  The second crew did some swapping out and observed their camera shots in the control room.  Two students called the game, along with a sideline reporter and one camera person/floor director, who was camped out in the balcony overlooking the gym.
"It's new equipment, new gym, and the first game-new everything," said Nathan Hogrell, a junior taking the TV Production class who was among those filming the basketball game Tuesday night.
"It's interesting and it's more like a professional situation, because we're filming with multiple cameras instead of just one," said junior Alli May, who set up her camera at one end of the gym.  "This is my first production in the new school."

"I'm excited since this is nothing the high school has ever done before," said junior Joe Fazio, another TV Production student, from his filming stance on the balcony.  "The players are amused because it looks like a real NBA game and they're the stars," said Fazio, who plans to major in sports communications in college.
"I did this for a student-faculty game last year, commentating, and it was fun," said senior volunteer, Garrett Wilde.  "I like working with cameras and I'm very athletic and like to be involved in sports," said Wilde.
Kudos to Scott Cray and the TV Production students for stepping up sports coverage to a new level of polish and professionalism!

HISTORICAL TIDBIT:

  CHRISTMAS CAROLS

The word carol means: "dance or a song of praise and joy!"   Earlier carols were sung in Latin, but in 1223 Saint Francis of Assisi began his Nativity Plays in Italy, where choruses sang songs or 'canticles' that told the story during the play.   These carols were sung in a language the audiences could understand and join in.

New carols soon spread throughout Europe.  The earliest carol of this style was written in 1410, though only a small fragment of it exists.  The carols of this time were loosely based on the Christmas story, mostly sung as entertainment rather than religious songs, like the carol, "I Saw Three Ships."
Sometimes local town leaders would gather official carol singers called 'Waits' to sing.  They were called 'Waits' because they would sing only on Christmas Eve, also known as 'watchnight' or 'waitnight', because shepherds were watching their sheep when the angels appeared.
Today Carols have become an important part of our Christmas celebration.  In churches, town commons, homes, stores and on radio stations, one can hear Christmas Carols throughout the season.

Coping with Grief at the Holidays by Kim Noble, RN, MBA; YHC Program Coordinator
The holiday music is playing from car radios throughout shopping centers and the grocery stores.  Both traditional and new holiday movies are on cable TV daily.  Decorations are everywhere!  It is a festive time of the year.  However, for families who have experienced the death of a loved one, this can be a challenging time.  There is someone missing at the table for gift giving and at all the traditional family celebrations.  If this is the first winter holiday season since that loved one's death, families can struggle with how to celebrate while also acknowledging grief they feel. Hospice Calgary has compiled a 6-page resource, "For those who grieve: a holiday survival kit," that addresses coping strategies, ways to cherish memories and includes a holiday checklist to help families really consider what traditions they want to do this year and also think about possible new options.  Please share these resources with families you know who are coping with grief during this season.

United Way of Greater Plymouth County and its community partners worked to collect coats and donations for "United Way's Grateful Giving:  Keeping Kids Warm This Winter" reaching local children in need in Plymouth county.

For the month of November and into December, United Way of Greater Plymouth County and its community partners worked to collect coats and donations for its third year of "United Way's Grateful Giving:  Keeping Kids Warm This Winter," a winter apparel drive for the local children in need in Plymouth county.

Donations were received from Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital - Plymouth, BlumShapiro, Empower Yourself, Macy's and Target.   With funds from the Hurley Trust and with these generous donations, United Way was able to provide coats, hats, gloves and boots to over 150 families in Plymouth county.

"We are thrilled to see the community come together to help with this initiative.  Working together, we were able to get these items to the children who really need them this winter," said United Way President & CEO Dennis Carman,  "As long as there are children who need warm clothing, we hope our Grateful Giving Initiative will continue for years to come."

The winter apparel items were donated to The Arc of Greater Plymouth's Food Pantry at Algonquin Heights, the Family Center at Community Connections of Brockton, and Carolina Hill Shelter in Marshfield.

Love One Another

"Love each other dearly always.  There is scarcely anything else in the world but that:  to love one another."

Victor Hugo

"Love one another and help others to rise to the higher levels, simply by pouring out love.  Love is infectious and the greatest healing energy."

"Hatred paralyzes life, love releases it.  Hatred confuses life, love harmonizes it.  Hatred darkens life, love illuminates it."  ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
