Historical Tidbit:
Christmas on our Common

Bridgewater was founded from old Puritan stock and they felt that holiday celebrations were the work of the devil.  The Unitarians had a different outlook and were always trying to lighten up the crusty old Yankees.
Local business records show that Christmas day, up until the 1850's was just another work day.  Europe was about 50 years ahead of us in celebrating the holiday.  Christmas was not declared a national holiday until 1870.  Charles Dickens published "A Christmas Carol" in 1846.  Businesses around the Common did not receive electric service until about 1890.  Until that time they were illuminated by candle, kerosene lamps or gas lights if they were open at all after dark.
After 1900, celebrating the holidays as we know them today gradually became more common.  The influx of immigrant families bringing European customs with them gradually spread the celebration throughout the town.  As far as lighting the Common, there is no record of it until the end of WWII.  A group of wives of Bridgewater businessmen organized to build a Christmas display for the Common.  The majority of lumber that was used for the small buildings came from casket shipping crates from the local funeral homes.  The women handled the painting and the set-up.  As time went on, the town took over the display and eventually turned it over to the Bridgewater Lions Club.  Under their direction and the volunteer efforts of many local businessmen, it just seems to get better every year.

Respectfully submitted, David Moore

Bridgewater/Raynham High School's Robotic's Team:
TJ2
 Trojans = T  &  Johnson & Johnson = J2

Each September, TJ2 recruits and welcomes new students from the ranks of Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School.  The 80-90 students who initially sign up for this popular program begin preparing for the upcoming build/competition season by engaging in the many team activities that are required for success; most importantly, fundraising.  Through sponsorship, our annual Cape Cod Canal Day "bike-a-thon" and Gala Benefit Dinner & Auction team members race to generate the money that the team depends on.

  • TJ2 Robotics is a year-round program, part of the FIRST Program
  • Consists of Students, Teachers, Engineers, Parents, Community Members and other professionals
  • Members with broad ranges of interests and talents, working together to achieve common goals of accomplishment, success, and pride.

In early January, TJ2 receives, along with more than a thousand teams from across the world, the new "Game" challenge.  Then, for the next six intense weeks, the team strives to design and construct a robot that can successfully meet the challenges of game play.  Once the completed robot is shipped, team coaches and members prepare for the competitions ahead. Those most dedicated students who have logged enough hours and raised the most money are selected for the "travel team."  These will be the team representatives at the regional competitions and, with any luck, the National Championship in St. Louis in April.
TJ2 is divided up into sub groups that each completes a specific task to help the team survive as a whole.  The following is a brief description of each of our specialist teams.

The Strategy Group, The Art Group, The Programming Group, The Build Group, and The Public Relations Group.
This year the PR group will be geared towards community involvement in an effort to interest young minds in the field of STEM.

Jan 09 they have a Kickoff and Jan 10, a Design Meeting.

Love One Another

"Love each other dearly always.  There is scarcely anything else in the world but that:  to love one another."

Victor Hugo

"Love one another and help others to rise to the higher levels, simply by pouring out love.  Love is infectious and the greatest healing energy."

"Hatred paralyzes life, love releases it.  Hatred confuses life, love harmonizes it.  Hatred darkens life, love illuminates it."  ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Coping with Grief at the Holidays by Kim Noble RN, MBA; YHC Program Coordinator
The holiday music is playing from car radios, throughout shopping centers and the grocery stores.  Both traditional and new holiday movies are on cable TV daily.  Decorations are everywhere!  It is a festive time of the year. However, for families who have experienced the death of a loved one, this can be a challenging time.  There is someone missing at the table for gift giving and at all the traditional family celebrations.  If this is the first winter holiday season since that loved one's death, families can struggle with how to celebrate while also acknowledging grief they feel.  Hospice Calgary has compiled a 6-page resource, "For those who grieve: a holiday survival kit," that addresses coping strategies, ways to cherish memories and includes a holiday checklist to help families really consider what traditions they want to do this year and also think about possible new options.  Please share these resources with families you know who are coping with grief during this season.

To learn about developmental differences in children's grief, visit The Dougy Center
