First Mill
Part 2

Shortly after the town was incorporated in 1734, one of the proprietors who started out with a ½ share in the furnace had bought all shares and owned the furnace outright.  In 1755 he purchased from William Sturtevant's heirs,  the homestead and all the land which these buildings were on except for 3/4 share of a saw mill.
By 1821 this site was owned by the Hobart & Mitchell Company and had grown to include the following buildings:

            4½ dwelling houses consisting of:
                        the red house
                        the yellow house
                        the cook house
                        the long house
                        ½ Tinkham house

                        a store
                        warehouse
                        gristmill
                        sawmill
                        cotton and woolen factory
                        a furnace
                        a cuplow furnace (?)
                        2 barns
                        coal house
                        dye house
                        blacksmith shop
                        corn house.

            The land included:
                        8 acres of tillage
6 acres of English mowing (hay)
60 acres of fresh mowing (hay)
                     22 acres of pasture
                       3 acres of wood lots
                     80 acres of unimproved land.

For the animals needed, there were horses, oxen, cows and swine.

Water Update

The Halifax Water Department has started to fill the tank and residents might experience discolored water for the next several days (starting on Wednesday, December 16) as the tank is filled and the Water Department waits for test results. Once the tank is full, the Water Department will need to shut it down and go back on Brockton water until the test results come back, which could be four to five days.  If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Water Department at 781-293-1733.

Coping with Grief at the Holidays by Kim Noble RN, MBA; YHC Program Coordinator
The holiday music is playing from car radios throughout shopping centers and the grocery stores.  Both traditional and new holiday movies are on cable TV daily.  Decorations are everywhere!  It is a festive time of the year.  However, for families who have experienced the death of a loved one, this can be a challenging time. There is someone missing at the table for gift giving and at all the traditional family celebrations.  If this is the first winter holiday season since that loved one's death, families can struggle with how to celebrate, while also acknowledging grief they feel.  Hospice Calgary has compiled a 6-page resource, "For those who grieve:  a holiday survival kit," that addresses coping strategies, ways to cherish memories and includes a holiday checklist to help families really consider what traditions they want to do this year and also think about possible new options.  Please share these resources with families you know who are coping with grief during this season.

Love One Another

"Love each other dearly always.  There is scarcely anything else in the world but that:  to love one another."

Victor Hugo

"Love one another and help others to rise to the higher levels, simply by pouring out love.  Love is infectious and the greatest healing energy."

"Hatred paralyzes life, love releases it.  Hatred confuses life, love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life, love illuminates it."  ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

With hope, peace, joy & love, enjoy your holiday.

Halifax in Lights Committee
While the 2016 edition of Halifax in Lights, the Town's summer celebration, is nine months away, the Halifax in Lights Committee is looking for residents and others to serve on the Committee.  Halifax in Lights is one of the Town's largest events.  The planning and fundraising for the event must start months in advance, so volunteers are needed now.  Anyone interested on serving on the Committee may contact  the Halifax Board of Selectmen's office at
