HISTORICAL TIDBIT:

Christmas Traditions in America

Many of our 'modern' Christmas Traditions began in 1819 from the American author Washington Irving's story series titled, "The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon."  Irving, famous for "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle," based his sketches on a Squire who invites peasants into his home for the holiday to enjoy ancient  English traditions.  Though historians now say Irving invented these traditions, they remain today the foundation of our Christmas celebration.
The poem "Night before Christmas" in 1822 introduced St. Nicholas as an elf with a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.  Illustrator Thomas Nast created images of Santa in the 1863 Christmas issue of Harper's magazine.  New York Sun editor Francis P. Church in 1897 answered, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" in response to a young girl's letter.  Rudolph was created in 1939.  Robert L. May wrote the poem about the ninth reindeer for a coloring book to be distributed by Montgomery Ward Department Store at Christmas.  The song, "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," was written by Johnny Marks and made famous by Gene Autry in 1949.
The traditions of Christmas Trees and Carols, Mistletoe and Fruit Cake, Stockings and Wreaths come to us from various countries and regions throughout the world.
No matter the tradition, no matter its origin, consistent Christmas themes remain - hope, joy, peace and giving with care.

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

How Difficult Can This Be?  F.A.T. City Workshop: Understanding Learning Disabilities.
Tuesday, January 12th, at 6 pm

Through striking simulations emulating daily experiences of children with learning disabilities, Richard Lavoie's video lets viewers experience their frustration, anxiety, and tension.  After watching the video, Deb Westell, Principal of Merrill Elementary School, will reflect with the audience on how to change our approach with children who have these challenges.  The presentation will be held at The Bridge Center, 470 Pine St., Bridgewater, MA.

Please register online in advance for free childcare at:  www.thebrigectr.org

The BR-SEPAC is made up of parents who represent about 850 children with special needs within the Bridgewater-Raynham School district.  The BR-SEPAC works collaboratively with the Bridgewater-Raynham Public Schools and Bridgewater-Raynham School Committee to provide support and information for parents, school personnel, and the community about disabilities and the special education process.  The Bridgewater-Raynham SEPAC accomplishes this through regular meetings, workshops, presentations, and special events.  The meeting is free and open to all.  For more information, visit our website:  brsepac.org or email kwaskiel@hotmail.com.

Coping with Grief at the Holidays by Kim Noble, RN, MBA; YHC Program Coordinator
The holiday music is playing from car radios throughout shopping centers and the grocery stores.  Both traditional and new holiday movies are on cable TV daily.  Decorations are everywhere!  It is a festive time of the year.  However, for families who have experienced the death of a loved one, this can be a challenging time.  There is someone missing at the table for gift giving and at all the traditional family celebrations. If this is the first winter holiday season since that loved one's death, families can struggle with how to celebrate, while also acknowledging grief they feel.  Hospice Calgary has compiled a 6-page resource, "For those who grieve: a holiday survival kit," that addresses coping strategies, ways to cherish memories and includes a holiday checklist to help families really consider what traditions they want to do this year and also think about possible new options.  Please share these resources with families you know who are coping with grief during this season.

To learn about developmental differences in children's grief, visit The Dougy Center.

Special thanks to South Shore Hospital's Youth Health Connection for this information.

Love One Another

"Love each other dearly always.  There is scarcely anything else in the world but that:  to love one another."

Victor Hugo

"Love one another and help others to rise to the higher levels, simply by pouring out love.  Love is infectious and the greatest healing energy."

"Hatred paralyzes life, love releases it.  Hatred confuses life, love harmonizes it.  Hatred darkens life, love illuminates it." ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
