A BIG "THANK YOU" to our Community Volunteers!

Each week through December 31, 2015, we will feature shout-outs in the Buzz Around Weekender to our community volunteers:

Like:
"Pleasant Hill Cemetery WB thanks mason Steve Springhetti and his crew for their volunteer help this year re-setting vandalized head stones in July and November." ~ Lauren Delaney

and

"Thank you Pat McElroy for spending every Friday volunteering your time in the EB Town Clerk's Office; all of your work is immeasurable." ~ Dina Livingston

In addition to the Shout-Out:  Each person will be entered into a random drawing early January 2016 to receive any one of the following:  a $50 gift certificate to Grant's Rental; an hour-long Massage from Melissa Goldmann Massage Therapy; a $25 gift certificate to Johnnie Macaroni's; or a 7-day Shakology jump start - health kit w/shaker cup & a variety of flavors, value $35 from Ruggiero Fitness Concepts.

Please give us names, emails, and just one sentence on why they are appreciated:  Events@buzzaround.info.  We will contact them to ask permission for the mention and put them in the drawing for the gifts.
Join us in giving volunteers the recognition they deserve! ~ The Buzz Around Team
A HUGE Congratulations to our Vikings Football Team
on their 11-win, 2-loss season.  We enjoyed watching your spirit and determination as you landed your Superbowl place in division 5.  Thank you for giving it your all.

Vikings Football middle linebacker Nick Bainter, a senior, shares this message to all:  "Just want to say 'thank you' to the whole East Bridgewater community that has supported us from the beginning to end. This a town like no other and I would not want to grow up anywhere else. The outcome was not what we wanted, but being an East Bridgewater Viking is one of the best things you can ever be.  This community has come together and it's been an amazing year.  Thank you to all."

Historical Tidbit :

History of the National Christmas Tree

On Christmas eve in 1923, Calvin Coolidge presided over the first public celebration of the lighting of the National Christmas Tree.  This outdoor tree is not to be confused with the White House Christmas Tree in the Blue Room.  The National Tree was planted in President's Park south of the White house.  The tree, donated by Vermont's Middlebury College, was decorated with 2,500 donated red, white and green bulbs.  Christmas carols were performed by the Epiphany Church choir and the Marine Corps band.
The lighting ceremony of our tree has always reflected United States current events.  After the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, the celebration included a surprise visit from Sir Winston Churchill. Wartime black-outs prevented the tree being lit from 1942-1944. In 1954, President Eisenhower changed the lighting of the tree to December 17th to be part of the Pageant of Peace, an event devoted to maintaining peace throughout the world.  In 1980, the tree was lit for only 417 seconds symbolizing each day hostages had been held in Iran.  In 2001, the children of 911 victims helped light the tree.
In 1973, a 42-foot Pennsylvania blue spruce was planted, donated by the National Arborist Association.  Before 1973, cut-trees were used.  In 1976 the tree began to die, so a 40-foot California Blue Spruce was donated by an anonymous family in Maryland.
The lighting of the National Christmas Tree by the President of the United States & the Pageant of Peace continue to be celebrated each year.

Healthy EB Update:
Hello and Happy Holidays!

The two main areas of a "Healthy EB" are physical activity and nutrition - Spearheading the Community Garden piece is Lisa Rue.  There will be a meeting:  Tuesday, January 19th, at the Old Colony YMCA here in EB.  Please plan to attend so that we can discuss the logistics of how and where the community garden would be implemented.  Please contact Lisa if you are interested.  What time would be best?  5:30, 6:00, 6:30, or 7:00 p.m.?

We are looking to expand the garden there at the Y as a starting place for community gardening.  But it still all takes time to plan out and implement - starting before the spring.

A number of us have experience in working with the Central School Gardeners... and there is still interest with students at the Middle School - where I taught an after school activity last spring with students.

Dave Sheedy will be seeing who would be our point person(s) in the schools.  Perhaps members from the EB Garden Club would be interested as well - ladies who had come to the CSG with the kids.  There is some funding from the grant at the Y, in addition to some tools and materials we already have, as well as support from some area businesses that had helped with the CSG.  Additionally, Terra Cura is a new sustainability venture run by Ron Maribett, and hopefully will be on board in some capacity.

"Many Hands Make Light Work...."

Regards,
Lisa

We've always known East Bridgewater nurtures talented musicians, but once in a while our kids really surprise us.  So here's a gift, East Bridgewater, a great surprise

The Quins (all EB students):  James "Quincy" Medaglia - Lead Guitar/Vox, '07; Jon LeCours - Bass/Vox, '09; Tyler McKean - Drums/Vox, '09; Rob Sturtevant - Rhythm Guitar/Vox, '12, making their way by hard work, real talent, and a soulful blues sound that tears us inside out while we are dancing across the floor.  Not many bands get paid for playing original songs; it's a plateau many aspire to.  After 2 ½ years of working and performing, getting their creative sound in front of audiences, these boys are working on their second album and are becoming widely known in the Boston club scene.
Inconsistency
Inconsistency

Some of their highlights?  Bars:  Johnnie D's in Somerville, Middle East in Cambridge; Festivals: Freedom Rally on Boston Common, Brookline Day at Lars Anderson Park.
Since Quincy says, "It's hard to let the creative juices flow when you're practicing for gigs," the Quins are in hibernation as they tape their new work.  Their second album will be released in 2016.  Meanwhile, here are some tracks to give us back home in EB a taste:

Our fav 50's Band Four In a Row entered the Open Mic Challenge at the Spire Center for Performing Arts in Plymouth.  They qualified for the final round and performed against eight other contestants at the finals on Friday 11/20.  There was a lot of amazing talent.  The boys did an awesome job and tied for first place.
Both winners will receive five hours of recording time at Seasound Recording Studio and an opening spot on the Spire schedule in the upcoming season.  Congratulations to Pete, Mike, Gus & Dan!
