THOMPSON GUN

The name Thompson was spelled a number of ways, always being the same family:  Thompson, Thomson, and Tomson.  John Tomson, from Halifax, had a famous gun which is 7 feet 4 1/2 inches long with a barrel itself being 6 and 1/2 feet long, weighing 20 pounds, 12 ounces; called the 1635 Thompson fowling gun.

This was the weapon he used during the King Philip War in 1675. The events of John Tomson as commander of the Middleboro Fort are written about in King Philip's War:  The History and Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict by Eric B. Schultz & Michael J. Tougias.  One of the events details how a shot from the fort reached a half a mile away.

This gun is in the collection held by the  Old Colony Historical Society Museum, Taunton (www.oldcolonyhistoricalsociety.org)  and can be seen on display at their museum.

Nunckatessett Greenway Project Update:
We recently had an awesome group of volunteers installing the 2nd kiosk, this one at the High Street pedestrian access to Stiles & Hart Conservation Parkland.
We envision building a pedestrian bridge crossing the Town River to connect the Town River Landing and bring the people into the downtown Bridgewater at that pocket-park, which will have public parking.

Connecting Stiles & Hart Conservation Parkland to Iron Works Parkland / Bay Circuit Trail via the sidewalk adds another 1.5 miles to our land & water trail network going back towards West Bridgewater.  Within a few weeks we will have trail signage across Bridgewater State University Campus to Great Hill, or to Carver's Pond, linking even more to our 'ribbon of green.'

There has also been an interesting development in discovering an Algonquin translation for the word 'Nunckatessett.'  It means 'Our Place of Wolves in the Woods.'

The Nunckatessett Greenway Committee is looking for a few volunteers to serve on our Leadership Team.  We do not have a slew of committees, only the Leadership Team and people who volunteer for specific tasks once in awhile.

The Nunckatessett Greenway is a network of trail spurs connecting the Town River and the Bay Circuit Trail to municipal and state conservation areas, historical sites, urban centers, school districts, Bridgewater State University, the Hockomock Swamp, and the Wild & Scenic Taunton River.  Set aside for passive recreation by the towns of West Bridgewater and Bridgewater, the Nunckatessett Greenway connects people to the natural world.

This holiday season,
we have choices:
we choose to be busy,
or we choose to be calm;
we choose to buy lots
or we choose to live simply;
we choose to nurture ourselves, or we choose to ignore our body & spirit;
we choose to be around people who hurt us, or we choose to be around those who love us.

Each day is a new chance to live the wisdom we have gained from past experiences.  Let's be kind to ourselves
this holiday season.  Live in joy.

Winner of Anti-Bullying Poster Contest

Congratulations to middle school student Ella Milne, who won the "We Stand Together" poster contest, to help spread the word about standing up to bullies.
"She captured the theme of this project extraordinarily with the pictures she chose for her collage," said 7th grade English teacher and team leader Mary Aiello-Jones.
The contest took place in class and related to the students' summer reading of The Revealers.
Students were asked to make a collage of pictures representing groups of friends and scenes of teens helping each other, in a quest to depict the "stand together against bullying" theme. They were asked to explain each picture on the poster and how it represents the anti-bullying focus.
The project was evaluated as a test grade, including the oral presentation to the class explaining the photos chosen.
Teachers reviewed the students' poster projects and judged the posters on creativity and connection to the overall bullying theme. Judging took place during the school day over a few days' time.
Great job, Ella!

 Try this Glitter Snowflake Craft!

Watch these snowflakes crystallize overnight!  Make snowflakes by twisting 3 or more pipe cleaners together, adding small pieces to the ends.  Fill a narrow deep bowl or jar with 3 tbl borax and 1 cup of hot water; mix till borax is dissolved.  Tie the snowflake to a pencil and suspend in the water making sure the snowflake doesn't touch the sides of the bowl.
  Allow to sit overnight.  In the morning, remove snowflake from the bowl to find it magically turned to glittery crystal!
