Historical Tidbit:

FIRST MILL
Part 1

            If you were to walk along Furnace Street in Halifax, you would find very little evidence left that there was ever any industrial activity along there.  Yet for a period of 117 years this was the busiest part of the town, and certainly at the beginning, the center of activity.  It appears from a deed search the first mill built here in Halifax was at this site.  At that time, however, this portion of land was in Plympton and very close to what was then the Pembroke line (now Hanson).  It was a grain mill and built on that portion of land known as Major's Purchase.  Samuel Sturtevant had inherited this land from his father and he, in turn, had his son William settle here.  All that is known today is that the mill was built prior to 1729-30.
            In a deed dated January 12, 1729-30, there was an agreement between Thomas Croade, James Sturtevant, Jacob Chipman, James Bryant and Isaac Thomas that was signed by William Sturtevant to "build and erect on my land a furnace, cool house, pot house, dwelling house, with all other houses and buildings necessary for the convenes and accommodations of said furnace."

The mill was at one time know as Bosworth Brother's Mill, but before that it was know as the "Olde Cotton Mill," built about 1800.

Respectfully submitted, Sue Basile

This holiday season,
we have choices:
we choose to be busy,
or we choose to be calm;
we choose to buy lots
or we choose to live simply;
we choose to nurture ourselves, or we choose to ignore our body & spirit;
we choose to be around people who hurt us, or we choose to be around those who love us.

Each day is a new chance to live with the wisdom we have gained from past experiences.  Let's be kind to ourselves this holiday season.  Live in hope & live in joy.

Halifax in Lights Committee
While the 2016 edition of Halifax in Lights, the Town's summer celebration, is nine months away, the Halifax in Lights Committee is looking for residents and others to serve on the Committee.  Halifax in Lights is one of the Town's largest events.  The planning and fundraising for the event must start months in advance, so volunteers are needed now.  Anyone interested on serving on the Committee may contact the Halifax Board of Selectmen's office at 781-294-1316.
