Historical Tidbit :

 Hurricane of 1938
   "The early fall in New England is well-known as possible hurricane weather, but few were prepared for the terrible storm that hit this area on September 21, 1938.  It was reported:   "A terrifying hurricane swept the area for two hours Wednesday afternoon doing considerable damage.  The winds, which at times reached a velocity estimated at close to 100 miles an hour, created an emergency which was quickly and efficiently handled.  It is estimated that over 100 giant elms and other trees that line the streets of town were uprooted as well as many trees on private property.  Considerable property damage was done.  It was not possible to obtain an accurate estimate last evening."
   Many homes all over the region were damaged.  Power lines and telephone poles were down and roofs swept away from homes by the howling winds, leaving vacant gaps on houses and barns throughout the community.
The steeple of the First Parish Unitarian Church in East Bridgewater was uplifted and plunged point down through the roof of the church. "

This holiday season,
we have choices:
we choose to be busy,
or we choose to be calm;
we choose to buy lots
or we choose to live simply;
we choose to nurture ourselves, or we choose to ignore our body & spirit;
we choose to be around people who hurt us, or we choose to be around those who love us.

Each day is a new chance to live with the wisdom we have gained from past experiences.  Let's be kind to ourselves this holiday season.  Live in hope & live in joy.

Top Tips to Help You stay Motivated and Fit
This Holiday Season

1) Partner up for the HolidaysGrab a buddy to stay accountable.  The more, the merrier!  Make it a family affair!

2) Bring FoodFailing to plan is planning to fail!  Bring food you know you can eat to parties and exert control!  One Christmas cookie won't unravel your hard work, but 10 certainly will!

3) Eat Before You Go ~ Fill up on a small meal, such as a nutrition shake; you'll be less likely to splurge.  Ensure you are hydrated; our bodies can confuse hunger for thirst!

4) I Really Regret That Workout, Said No One Ever!So you may not be able to beast it out as long as you normally do with all of the holiday hoopla going on; that's fine, as long as you get something in.  Don't take a holiday from your workouts!

5) Portion Your PlateThe traditional holiday plate is around 1300 calories!  Cut the calories in half by starting with the greens FIRST!  Then add the meat, followed by all the fixings and eat your meal in this order!  You just saved yourself around 600 calories!

Once in a while, we like to profile our small businesses... because the
Buzz Around is about Shop Small, EVERYDAY!!!!

The East Bridgewater Candle Company, Inc., was formed by two friends, Lynn Barsanti and Christine Quaglia in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts. They shared a love for candles and had a passion to create a great smelling, high quality, affordable, healthy alternative to paraffin wax candles.

They researched and tested several soy waxes, fragrances, wicks and containers.  After months of work and fun, they now feel that they can offer a great product that can be enjoyed by anyone who wants the same qualities in their candles that they sought to create.  Their 100% Soy candles are made from soybeans grown in the USA.  All of their candles are hand poured one at a time with love, using 100% cotton wicks and no added dyes.  The candles are scented with a blend of essential and fragrance oils.
Some of the benefits of Soy Candles:
  1. Soy burns longer than paraffin - on average 7-8 hours per ounce of soy.
  2. Soy is sustainable.  Unlike paraffin, which is derived from oil, soy is a renewable resource made from the oil of soybeans.  The soy used today was likely in the ground less than one year ago and that same field could be growing more soy for the future.
  3. Soy is better for your health.  Soy burns cleaner and produces as much as 90 percent less soot than paraffin, reducing the amount of indoor air pollution produced.
  4. Soy won't ruin your walls:  The emissions from paraffin candles build up on walls, staining the paint in your home.  They also build up in upholstery fabrics and in carpets, affecting the air quality in your home.
  5. Spilled soy is easier to clean up:  Soy is biodegradable, so if it spills on your tablecloth or clothing, just clean with soap and water. (It's a lot easier to clean up than paraffin!)

  6. Christine and Lynn started working on candles in December of 2011 and introduced them to the public in July of 2012. Now they are carried in two East Bridgewater Stores:  CN Smith Farm and Lavender Sky Gifts.   They travel to craft fairs and their candles make a great fundraising item.

    The Buzz Around loves to celebrate artists, inventors entrepreneurs.  Great job, Ladies.
Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.~ Desmond Tutu

"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul - and sings the tunes without the words - and never stops at all."

"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."
