Girl Scouts/Firefighters Annual Toy & Food Drive
Saturday, December 5

We can't believe a whole year has passed.
On Saturday, December 5, the Halifax Firefighters Association and Girl Scouts will, once again, team up with Santa and Mrs. Claus to collect new unwrapped toys and non-perishable food.

Gift certificates are a great idea for the older boys and girls.
These items are donated to the local churches and food pantries and distributed to families in Halifax that are in need.
Items can be left curbside or dropped at the Fire Station on the day of the event only.

Here is the time list of when Santa will be in our neighborhoods to pick up toys:

For a web page of this list:  click here for link for time schedule  If you do not see your street listed, please use the time for the street closest to yours. The truck is unable to make it down all the streets in town. Call Christine Markunas (781-588-4886) with any questions.

This holiday season,
we have choices:
we choose to be busy,
or we choose to be calm;
we choose to buy lots
or we choose to live simply;
we choose to nurture ourselves, or we choose to ignore our body & spirit;
we choose to be around people who hurt us, or we choose to be around those who love us.

Each day is a new chance to live with the wisdom we have gained from past experiences.  Let's be kind to ourselves this holiday season.  Live in hope & live in joy.

Historical Tidbit:

TAVERNS IN HALIFAX

          Dunbar's Tavern was a large two-story gambrel roof building built by the elder Daniel Dunbar for his son, Daniel, possibly as early as 1700.  Many stirring scenes took place there as the Dunbars were Tories, and the younger Daniel was driven out of town.  This building was bought and torn down by J. Levering Jones before 1934.  This once grand building stood on the east side of Hemlock Lane at the corner of Plymouth Street.
          Across the street from the Congregational Church, on the corner of Plymouth and South Street, stands what is known as Pope's Tavern built by Stafford Sturtevant for his son-in-law, Captain Henry Pope, and his daughter Lydia.  It was built before October 1830 as at a convention held there on October 13, 1830, John Quincy Adams was elected to be sent to Congress in Washington, D.C.  Today the building is used for the town's senior citizens.

Going west down from Pope's Tavern was the site of Bosworth's Tavern.  It was located in the area of the parking lot for the Brockton Store and Vaughan Field.  David Bosworth, who was born and died in Halifax (1669 - 1747), built it in the very early days. His grandson, John Bosworth, later ran the Tavern.

The Holidays in Halifax committee is looking for some students who would like to gain some event planning experience and be part of the fun in organizing our beloved event.  These positions will provide opportunities for responsibility, and leadership experience above and beyond the general volunteer hours (which will look great on your college or job applications when we write recommendations for you).  We're looking for energy, ideas and enthusiasm.
Positions will include:

Street team captains:
  You'll be assigned a "ZONE" or area of the festival and will be our "go-to" person in planning the activities, and recruiting your own team members to help run your zone during the event.

Media team:
Help disperse all our announcements through social, print and cable media.  Possibility of some graphic and video production.  Maybe....dare I say....website development for the truly talented.  Bring your ideas!!!

Keep an eye out, as more positions may be developed and posted.  Again, send us your ideas!

Send us an email to holidaysinhalifax@gmail.com if you're interested.

Top Tips to Help You stay Motivated and Fit
This Holiday Season

1) Partner up for the HolidaysGrab a buddy to stay accountable.  The more, the merrier!  Make it a family affair!

2) Bring FoodFailing to plan is planning to fail!  Bring food you know you can eat to parties and exert control!  One Christmas cookie won't unravel your hard work, but 10 certainly will!

3) Eat Before You Go ~ Fill up on a small meal, such as a nutrition shake; you'll be less likely to splurge.  Ensure you are hydrated; our bodies can confuse hunger for thirst!

4) I Really Regret That Workout, Said No One Ever!So you may not be able to beast it out as long as you normally do with all of the holiday hoopla going on; that's fine, as long as you get something in.  Don't take a holiday from your workouts!

5) Portion Your PlateThe traditional holiday plate is around 1300 calories!  Cut the calories in half by starting with the greens FIRST!  Then add the meat, followed by all the fixings and eat your meal in this order!  You just saved yourself around 600 calories!

Articles to help with an elementary school child's health  & education are posted on the Halifax Elementary School website from Kerry Daigler, HES Adjustment Counselor

Here is one article from this month's newsletter:

  Take advantage of opportunities to build your child's thinking skills...
Experts link diet, sleep habits and exercise to school success.  Abstract thinking involves learning concepts and applying them to various situations.  A child who has learned to count, for example, can get out the correct number of plates when setting the table for dinner.  Help your child think about common elementary school subjects, such as:
* Language arts.  Before, during and after reading, encourage your child to answer questions.  Try asking questions that start with "Why" and "What if."  "Why do you think the character did that?"  "What if she had made a different decision?"
* Math.  Challenge your child to catch mistakes.  For example, you might count by twos and say, "2, 4, 6, 7."  Can he figure out what's wrong?  Also do activities that include building and sorting.  "Let's build a tiny model of our car."  "Can you help me reorganize this shelf of canned food?"
* Science.  Read about nature and encourage your child to use what he learns.  "The leaves are falling off that tree.  What's that type of tree called?"  "The flowers we planted last year grew back.  Are they annuals or perennials?"  "Look at that fly.  Do flies have four wings or two?"

Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.~ Desmond Tutu

"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul - and sings the tunes without the words - and never stops at all."

"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."

Halifax in Lights Committee
While the 2016 edition of Halifax in Lights, the Town's summer celebration, is nine months away, the Halifax in Lights Committee is looking for residents and others to serve on the Committee.  Halifax in Lights is one of the Town's largest events. The planning and  fundraising for the event must start months in advance, so volunteers are needed now.  Anyone interested on serving on the Committee may contact the Halifax Board of Selectmen's office at 781-294-1316.
