Buzz Around West Bridgewater
Nunckatessett Greenway Project

A land and water trail network connecting people to the historical and natural places along the Town River and Bay Circuit Trail in West Bridgewater and Bridgewater, and  to their downtown business districts and school zones.

The Nunckatessett Greenway is a network of trail spurs connecting the Town River and the Bay Circuit Trail to municipal and state conservation areas, historical sites, urban centers, school districts, Bridgewater State University, the Hockomock Swamp, and the Wild & Scenic Taunton River.  Set aside for passive recreation by the towns of West Bridgewater and Bridgewater, the Nunckatessett Greenway connects people to the natural world.

Check out our developing website at www.nunckatessettgreenway.org

Our volunteers are in the process of finishing up the construction and installation of three kiosks along our trail network (Beaverton Woods, Woodchuck Chase, and Stiles & Hart) plus several smaller signs, using a $2,500 1:1 matching grant from the Wild & Scenic Taunton RIver Stewardship Council.

We also had nine volunteers from West Bridgewater, Bridgewater and Bridgewater State University partake in a Trails Stewardship Training Workshop facilitated by Beth Gula from AMC; these local stewards will now share their knowledge with other stewards in our trail network in order to ensure a sustainable management.

Historical Tidbit: The Jury System in the Pilgrim Settlement

"Although the Pilgrims sailed to the New World in the quest for religious freedom, these explorers maintained a respect, and need, for English common law. Three years after their arrival in Plymouth, the Pilgrims codified the colony's laws.  On December 17, 1623, colony officials decreed 'that all criminal facts, and also matters of trespasse and debts betweene man and man should be tried by the verdict of twelve honest men to be impanelled by authority in forme of a jury upon their oath'."

"In 1641, lawyer-clergyman Nathaniel Ward of Ipswich drew up the Body of Liberties, setting the basis of colonial law in Massachusetts...
Under the Liberties, 'free men' could serve on two juries in a year.  Jurors were picked 'by the freemen of the Town where they dwell'."

"From the beginning, even in the 17th century, failure to perform juror service was punished.  Under Colonial law, starting in 1647, 'if such person shall refuse to serve in, or take upon him any such Office, being legally chosen thereunto, he shall pay for such refusall, such fine, as the Town shall impose not exceeding twenty shillings for one offence'."
