Articles to help with an elementary school child's health  & education are posted on the Halifax Elementary School website from Kerry Daigler, HES Adjustment Counselor

Here is one article from this month's newsletter:

  Take advantage of opportunities to build your child's thinking skills...
Experts link diet, sleep habits and exercise to school success.  Abstract thinking involves learning concepts and applying them to various situations. A child who has learned to count, for example, can get out the correct number of plates when setting the table for dinner.  Help your child think about common elementary school subjects, such as:
* Language arts.  Before, during and after reading, encourage your child to answer questions.  Try asking questions that start with "Why" and "What if."  "Why do you think the character did that?"  "What if she had made a different decision?"
* Math.  Challenge your child to catch mistakes.  For example, you might count by twos and say, "2, 4, 6, 7."  Can he figure out what's wrong?  Also do activities that include building and sorting.  "Let's build a tiny model of our car."  "Can you help me reorganize this shelf of canned food?"
* Science.  Read about nature and encourage your child to use what he learns.  "The leaves are falling off that tree.  What's that type of tree called?"  "The flowers we planted last year grew back.  Are they annuals or perennials?"  "Look at that fly.  Do flies have four wings or two?"

Monponsett Watershed Association News:

Our 3rd annual Fall Fundraiser was a smashing success!  We had a fantastic turnout; we actually had to add a few more tables to the room! This success will help us continue our independent water testing program and public education campaign for another season.  Thank you to all who came out, and to all who couldn't make it but supported in any way you could, and to all who donated goods and baskets, time and work.  We will have final numbers and a full list of our amazing, generous donors soon, but for now, a big "thank you" to the Monponsett Inn for partnering in this effort with us; to Selectman Kim Roy and Representative Tom Calter for their attendance and tireless support; to newly elected Senator Mike Brady for coming out and taking the time to meet us and learn about the Pond issues; and to DJ Bill Coleman of Boogieman DJ Services for keeping the program moving and keeping us dancing all night.

If you haven't become a member yet, please consider joining.  The more members we have, the more influence we have.  We are an all-volunteer, registered 501(c)(3) organization.  Dues are $15/year and can be sent with your name, address, and email address to Monponsett Watershed Association, PO Box 287, Halifax, MA  02338.

Historical Tidbit:
PERAMBULATION
[Walking Town Lines]

The word perambulation means "walking around."  The word was used to describe one of the old traditional English laws the first settlers brought to the New World with them.   When they began to break apart from the first settlements, they would have to determine the bounds of a legal area such as a town, by physically walking around it.

In the historical development of the United States and other former British colonial nations, the filing of a townsite or plan was often the first legal act in the establishment of a new town.  The earliest map the Historical Society has a record of was one done in 1734, the year the town was incorporated.  It appears to show the markings of the boundaries that the inhabitants wanted set apart to establish the town of Halifax.

Respectfully submitted, Sue Basile

The Evening Readers Book Club meets monthly
at the Holmes Public Library.
This month's selection is
Marcelo in the Real World
by Francisco X. Stork.
Pick up a copy at the library ahead of time, and join the discussion.
Reminiscent of "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" in the intensity and purity of its voice, this extraordinary novel challenges the boundaries of autism.  It is a love story, a legal drama, and a celebration of the music each of us hears inside.
New members or one-time visitors to the book club are welcome!
Copies of the book are available at the library in regular print and large print.

Holidays in Halifax - Volunteers Needed:

The Holidays in Halifax committee is looking for some students who would like to gain some event planning experience and be part of the fun in organizing our beloved event.  These positions will provide opportunities for responsibility, and leadership experience above and beyond the general volunteer hours (which will look great on your college or job applications when we write recommendations for you).  We're looking for energy, ideas and enthusiasm.
Positions will include:

Street team captains:  You'll be assigned a "ZONE" or area of the festival and will be our "go-to" person in planning the activities, and recruiting your own team members to help run your zone during the event.

Media team:  Help disperse all our announcements through social, print and cable media.  Possibility of some graphic and video production.  Maybe....dare I say....website development for the truly talented.  Bring your ideas!!!

Keep an eye out, as more positions may be developed and posted.  Again, send us your ideas!

Send us an email to holidaysinhalifax@gmail.com if you're interested.

Thank you, Veterans.
The Noble and the Brave:

A Veteran's Day Tribute

When America had an urgent need,
These brave ones raised a hand;
No hesitation held them back;
They were proud to take a stand.

They left their friends and family;
They gave up normal life;
To serve their country and their God,
They plowed into the strife.

They fought for freedom and for peace
On strange and foreign shores;
Some lost new friends; some lost their lives
In long and brutal wars.

Other veterans answered a call
To support the ones who fought;
Their country had requirements for
The essential skills they brought.

We salute every one of them,
The noble and the brave,
The ones still with us here today,
And those who rest in a grave.

So here's to our country's heroes;
They're a cut above the rest;
Let's give the honor that is due
To our country's very best.

Water Tank Update:
Tata & Howard, the project manager for the painting of the water tower, issued this update on Monday, November 16:

From October 28 to November 16, the following tasks were done:

*       Installation of the intermediate coat on the inside of the tank roof;

*       Continued surface preparation and application of primer coat on tank exterior. This work was expected to be completed on Monday, November 16;

*       Abrasive blasting and priming of new access ladder.

Recent weather conditions (primarily high winds) have adversely affected the completion date of the project.  At this time, it appears that the tank rehabilitation work will continue into the second week of December.
