Buzz Around Bridgewater, MA

LINES OF FIRE PRESENTATION
Thursday, November 12, at 7 pm
First Parish Church
50 School St., Bridgewater
This presentation will be co-sponsored by VFW Post 2125 of Bridgewater.
It will be a live dramatic reading of letters from service people and their families from the American Revolution on. The program will be followed by refreshments and conversation.

FROM THE AUTHOR ANDREW CARROLL:

"LINES OF FIRE, and the larger effort behind it to honor and remember America's veterans and troops by preserving their war letters.

Over the past 15 years, veterans and their families have shared with me an estimated 100,000 previously unpublished war letters from every conflict in U.S. history, dating back to handwritten missives composed during the American Revolution through emails sent from Iraq and Afghanistan.  I created a one-act play titled LINES OF FIRE that's based on these correspondences. The National Endowment for the Arts has given us a $20,000 grant to take the play across the country.  The search for letters goes on, and we hope the play will encourage more veterans and their families to preserve these irreplaceable documents.

The play features dozens of extraordinary, previously unpublished, letters and three highlights include:

1)  the letter that a young Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., wrote to his family after he survived the firebombing of Dresden in World War II
2)  a young woman who was at Ground Zero on 9/11 and detailed, in a handwritten letter written from New Jersey, exactly what she and her colleagues had endured when they fled through the streets of lower Manhattan as the Twin Towers were falling, and
3)  a letter from a man who witnessed the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

This project has had an incredible amount of media attention over the past many years, including profiles on NBC News, Good Morning America, the Today Show, PBS, FOX News, History Channel, NPR, and CBS Sunday Morning.  We've also been featured multiple times in USA Today, the New York Times, National Geographic, the New Yorker, the Washington Post, and just about every major local newspaper throughout the country.  We were even a cover story for TIME magazine."

Respectfully submitted, Betty Gilson  (774-226-0942)

Historical Tidbit:
Law and Order before the 1800's in New England

Up until the early 1800's, enforcement of laws was done by
individuals appointed by the church.  Back then, the church was the legal authority.  If one was accused of a crime such as theft, adultery, or breaking and entering, he was tried before the church elders.  If he was found guilty, he was given the choice of a fine or lashes, but only after he confessed his crime to the members of the church.  If it was a capital crime involving the death of a person, they were tried by the county in Plymouth.

Following the American Revolution, the church was taken out of the law enforcement business.
Over the next 40 years, the towns moved their town meetings out of the churches and into town halls. Eventually towns would build their own jails.

The Bridgewater Public Library will feature an exhibit of South Shore Watercolors by Jack Sullivan in the
Flora T. Little Gallery.  The exhibition will be on display during the months of November and December.

Jack Sullivan was born in Boston and was raised in the Roslindale section of the city.  Jack as a child was not allowed television after dinner and a frequent amusement was drawing pictures.  Jack's mother allowed her children's artwork to be limited only by their imagination. There was one rule; that each sheet of paper be full, both sides, before another sheet was granted. In this  subtle way, the children were made to consider not just the subject, but the overall rectangular surface and all the marks on it - a savvy technique used by Jack's mother to help the children
appreciate composition and design.
Several years ago, Jack began sketching each of his five sons, then critiquing the sketches based on advice in books he borrowed from the library.  After drawing a while, the suggestions in the books seemed more practical.  After reading a while, his drawing became more focused. Drawing then reading - reading then drawing, he began getting better. The sketches developed into paintings and not just of his children but of landscapes and seascapes.  Jack lives with his family in

Harry Edmonds of the Pokanoket Wampanoag Tribe will open the program with a traditional Thanksgiving prayer.
Iron River Singers, Storm Boyz and Eastern Sons will perform drumming and singing.
The dances, which will take place throughout the day, will include lady's fancy shawl dance, jingle dress dance, grass dance, crow hop, lady's traditional dance and men's traditional dance. There will also be general inter-tribal dancing, offering guests an opportunity to join in the circle.
