Welcome Miss Stacey!

The Holmes Public Library has a new Children's and Youth Services Librarian: Stacey Beshers.  She comes from the Attleboro Public Library and is excited to begin Storytimes next week.  She loves singing and has a theater background.
I bet she knows how to tell a good story.  Stop by her desk and welcome her.

Welcome to Halifax, Miss Stacey!

Historical Tidbit:
Old House:  A description of a Colonial Home Construction

All the lumber in an old house was hand hewn, and all the latches were homemade.  Many of the inside doors had just wooden buttons for door knobs.  Strong sturdy doors made up the entrance, the front door being of the Christian Style, the upper panels of the door being shorter than the two lower, and the cross-board making the cross.  This design was supposed to keep out evil spirits.  It had five panes of glass above the panels, and also a hand-made latch.  If the doors were not Christian Cross, they were simple, just three boards up and down, and three boards across.
The chimney closet was reached by climbing from about the fifth of the nine stairs that go to the upper floor in the front hall.  It was kept closed by a wooden button.
The front room had a central beam in the ceiling and the other none. This room was called the parlor; we now would call it the "living room."  This parlor was paneled halfway up, and had a fireplace and chimney closet.  In the kitchen was the big fireplace.  It was five feet high and topped by a shelf on which were kept the clock and candles.  The brick oven was approximately five feet deep.  Fireplaces filled a great need back in those early days:  warmth, for our New England winters were very cold.
The walls and roofing boards of the old house were the widest that could be found, as the fewer the cracks, the less chance for the cold to come in.  There must have been enormous trees in the area back then.

            Respectfully submitted, Sue Basile

Pictures of the recent work on our water tower.
Images thanks to Sue Basile.

As of November 5, the water tank rehabilitation contractor has completed all structural repairs to the water tank and abrasive blast cleaning, priming, and stripe coating of the interior of the tank. The contractor continues to work on abrasive blast cleaning and priming of the tank exterior. The water tank rehabilitation work is anticipated to continue through the month of November, followed by site clean up and demobilization of construction equipment.

As part of the water tower painting project, the Town's water system continues to use water from the Brockton water system during each evening. This is necessary to supply an adequate supply of water to residents and businesses and to maintain the water pressure in the system. Because of the higher amounts of chlorine used by the City and because the Halifax water system is geographically much closer to Brockton's water treatment plant than the Brockton water system, there is a higher level of chlorine in the water than what Halifax uses. The water is tested each day and the level of chlorine remains well under the maximums allowed by state regulations. The Water Department appreciates your patience while this project continues. The Water Department welcomes anyone with questions about the water tower repainting project or the water system to call them at 781-293-1733.

Halifax in Lights Committee
While the 2016 edition of Halifax in Lights, the Town's summer
celebration, is nine months away, the Halifax in Lights Committee is
looking for residents and others to serve on the Committee.  Halifax in Lights is one of the Town's largest events. The planning and fundraising for the event must start months in advance, so volunteers are needed now. Anyone interested on serving on the Committee can contact the Halifax Board of Selectmen's office at 781-294-1316.
Overnight Parking Ban for the Winter Months
The Halifax Board of Selectmen has sent out the Town's annual notice
concerning the overnight parking ban in Halifax from November 1, 2015, to March 31, 2016.  In addition, the Board has reiterated that the Halifax Highway Department is not responsible for damage to property placed on Town property or within the rights-of-way for streets plowed by the Town.

This includes, but is not limited to, mailboxes,
sprinkler systems, trees, shrubs or landscaping, fences, light poles, etc.  In most cases, the Town owns 10 feet beyond the asphalt surface for roads accepted by the Town. Mailboxes should be installed at least four feet from the edge of the asphalt to the front of the mailbox. Many of the plows that are used have a wing that extends two feet or more beyond the cutting edge. This, combined with the snow coming off the plow, is what causes most of the damage.  It is impossible for the driver to see the edge of the asphalt under the snow; therefore, the plow may be off the edge of the road at times. In heavy snow conditions, the Department tries to push the snow at least a foot off the road.
From Boston Children's Hospital Center for Media &

There are four sections within this toolkit covering the topics of: The Basics, For Content They See, For Content They Make and For How They Interact.  Within each section there are age specific tips for parents of preschool, school-age, 'tweens and teens.
