With colder weather right around the corner, have you been thinking about how you can save money and energy at home? Have a question about your electric bill? Wonder what happens when the power goes out? Curious about what your local utility company is doing in your neighborhood?

National Grid and the Town of Bridgewater are hosting a FREE community event that will answer these questions - and many more - for our South Shore customers. The evening kicks off at 6 p.m. with refreshments and a talk with Marcy Reed, President of National Grid in Massachusetts: Monday, November 2, 2015,
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
Following a brief presentation and question and answer session, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an exhibit-hall style event that will feature displays on topics, including:

* Energy Efficiency - Find ways to save energy at ngrid.com/save
* Connect21 - National Grid's approach to creating the energy networks of the 21st century
* Understanding your utility bill - For ways to take control of your energy bills, visit ngrid.com/billhelp
* How we respond to power outages
* Energy safety
*Improving the reliability and resiliency of our electric systems
And more!

This event is also an opportunity for you to let us know how we're doing, in person. Dozens of National Grid representatives will be on hand to hear your feedback about the services you receive and to provide energy information and helpful tips.

Historical Tidbit :  Boston Post Cane
On August 2, 1909, Mr. Edwin A. Grozier, Publisher of the Boston Post
newspaper, forwarded to the Board of Selectmen in 700 towns in New England a gold-headed ebony cane with the request that it be presented with the compliments of the Boston Post to the oldest male citizen of the town, to be used by him as long as he lives (or moves from the town), and at his death handed down to the next oldest citizen of the town. The cane would belong to the town and not the man who received it.
The canes were all made by J.F. Fradley and Co., a New York manufacturer, from ebony shipped in seven-foot lengths from the Congo in Africa. They were cut to cane lengths, seasoned for six months, turned on lathes to the right thickness, coated and polished. They had a 14-carat gold head two inches long, decorated by hand, and a feruled tip. The head was engraved with the inscription - Presented by the Boston Post to the oldest citizen of Bridgewater - "To Be Transmitted." The Board of Selectmen were to be the trustees of the cane and keep it always in the the hands of the oldest citizen.

In 1924, Mr. Grozier died, and the Boston Post was taken over by his son, Richard, who failed to continue his father's success and eventually died in a mental hospital. At one time the Boston Post was considered the nation's leading standard-sized newspaper in circulation. Competition from other newspapers, radio and television contributed to the Post's decline and it went out of business in 1957.

The custom of the Boston Post Cane took hold in those towns lucky enough to have canes. As years went by some of the canes were lost,  taken out of town and not returned to the Selectmen or destroyed by accident. In 1930, after considerable controversy, eligibility for the cane was opened to women as well.
Bridgewater's Boston post cane can be seen on display at the Cole- Yeaton Senior Center.

Tiffany Gambill Rides Again!

TEAM TIFFANY!

On October 11, we rode to cure Friedreich's Ataxia (FA), a debilitating, life shortening neuromuscular disease that affects the heart, eyes, bones; the ability to walk, talk, eat, swallow and live a normal life. We rode with local FA families, friends and cycling enthusiasts to redefine what is possible in FA research.

We want to thank everyone for their support in the past. FARA is in the last leg of the marathon to find a cure!

This year, Tiffany is joining us in her wheelchair bike that she received from FARA's Ataxia Athletic Initiative Grant. We are very excited to be Team Tiffany!  Please donate: checks can be made out to FARA and sent to 20 Woodland Drive, Bridgewater, MA 02324, 533 W. Uwchlan Ave, Downington, PA 19335, or just follow this link and donate on-line to Team Tiffany!
