Tiffany Gambill Rides Again!

TEAM TIFFANY!

On October 11, we rode to cure Friedreich's ataxia (FA), a debilitating, life shortening neuromuscular disease that affects the heart, eyes, bones; the ability to walk, talk, eat, swallow and live a normal life. We rode with local FA families, friends and cycling enthusiasts to redefine what is possible in FA research.

We want to thank everyone for your support in the past. FARA is in the last leg of the marathon to find a cure!

This year, Tiffany is joining us in her wheelchair bike that she received from FARA's Ataxia Athletic Initiative Grant. We are very excited to be Team Tiffany!  Please donate: checks can be made out to FARA and sent to 20 Woodland Drive, Bridgewater, MA 02324, 533 W. Uwchlan Ave, Downington, PA 19335, or just follow this link and donate on-line to Team Tiffany!

Historical Tidbit :   Our Neighbor to the North

In early 1819, the North Parish of Bridgewater formed a committee petitioning the General Court of Massachusetts for a division of the town, listing two specific concerns. The first concern was the area and population of Bridgewater was getting too big and the expense of time and travel made attending town meetings difficult so far from their homes. The second concern was the meetinghouse was in disrepair and lacked sufficient size for the whole town to meet and transact their business. North Parish would be much better served by forming their own town.

A smaller group in North Parish petitioned against the division believing such reasons and arguments presented for the division were unjustified. They also wished if the petition for division was passed, they and their estates would be exempt and remain part of Bridgewater.

The town of Bridgewater itself also petitioned the General Court expressing regret and surprise regarding the division. They disagreed with the alleged sufferings expressed of road conditions and time of travel along with the size and condition of the towns meetinghouse. Their opinion, generally speaking, was the conditions in Bridgewater are uncommonly good compared to most towns throughout the state. Their main concern was this division would lead to the division of the whole town!

After much debate and consideration over the next two years, the State Senate and House passed the bill granting North Parish incorporation on June 15, 1821. The new town of North Bridgewater celebrated its first town meeting Independence Day in 1821.The name was changed from North Bridgewater to Brockton in 1874.

Welcome to the Graveyard
Wed, Oct 28, 6pm
Bridgewater Public Library

Cemetery educators, The Gravestone Girls, whose mission is to "Keep Our Dead Alive," will be presenting a virtual tour called "Welcome to the Graveyard," centered on Bridgewater's 18 local cemeteries at the Bridgewater Public Library, Wednesday, October 28, at 6:00pm. The 90- minute presentation is built on photographs recently taken in these special and interesting burying places around Bridgewater, which was established in 1656, and charts the evolution of cemeteries and gravestones from the colonial era into the 21st century.

The group teaches about the art, symbolism and history of these living history museums located on everyone's main streets and backyards and they examine why we have cemeteries and gravestones, why they look like they do, and how styles and art have evolved over almost 400 years.

The Gravestone Girls also create beautiful and unusual sculpted art pieces using the primitive art from the faces of original New England gravestones as well as teach gravestone rubbing classes and lead cemetery tours. Their gravestone artwork will be available to view plus there will be purchasing opportunities. Questions and answers are welcomed at the end.

The event, which is funded by the Friends of the Bridgewater Public Library, begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Bridgewater Public Library, is free and open to the public.
"Remembering Franklin D. Roosevelt,"
Tuesday, Oct 27, 6:30pm
Bridgewater Public Library

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the death of Franklin Roosevelt, a president whom many historians celebrate as the greatest president of the twentieth century.

Join us as we discuss how FDR's New Deal Programs worked to relieve the unemployment crisis of the Great Depression and in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, to fight and win a war in both Europe and Asia. No matter how grave the situation appeared, a confident FDR assured the nation that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

Hylander is currently an independent scholar who specializes as a presidential historian, a pedagogical specialist for the National Endowment for the Humanities and professor of history.

The event, which is funded by the Friends of the Bridgewater Public Library, begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgewater Public Library and is free and open to the public.
